7. Summary

1. Whats Alkylation
Alkylation is a conversion processes that combine light olefins

(primarily propylene and butylene) with isobutene in the presence of a strong acid catalyst, either sulfuric acid or hydrofluoric acid

Alkylation reaction
Sulfuric acid catalyst

Purpose & significane

Alkylate is the most desirable gasoline blend stock

No Olefins No Aromatics Low Sulfur Low RVP (Reid Vapour Pressure) High Octane Good Distillation Characteristics

Besides the alkylation of benzene with light olefins was also obtained alkylbenzenes with high octane

Feedstock
Olefin: propylene, butylene.
Butylene: from dehydrogenation butane

Iso-butane: from C4s fraction of FCC

Catalyst

H2SO4
HF

Reaction Mechanism
Ionization mechanism to intermediate stage

establish carbocation of proton acid catalyst

Description process flow
