What is HRD?
Definition
A set of systematic and planned activities designed by an organization to provide its members with the necessary skills to meet current and future job demand.

Relationship Between HRM and HRD


Human Resource Management (HRM) encompasses many functions.
Human Resource Development (HRD) is just one of the functions within HRM.

Concept of HRD
Naddler (1969) suggests that HRD includes training, education and development. McLagan (1989) defines HRD as the integrated use of training and development, organizational development and career development to improve individual, group and organizational effectiveness.

Concept of HRD
Giley and Eggland (1989) defined HRD as organised learning experiences provided by employers within a specified time to bring about the possibility of performance or personal growth. Watkins (1989) HRD fostering long-term, workrelated learning capacity at individual, group and organizational level.

Concept of HRD
From the organizational context, therefore, HRD is a process which helps employee of an organization to improve their functional capabilities for their present and future roles , to develop their general capabilities, to harness their inner potentialities both for their self and organizational development to develop harmonious superior-subordinate relationships, teamwork, motivation, quality, and belongingness.

According to Naddler there are three component of HRD Training Education Development

Objectives of HRD
To develop capabilities of all individuals working in an organization in relation to their present role. To develop capabilities of all such individuals in relation to their future role. To develop better interpersonal and employer-employee relationships in an organization. To develop team spirit. To develop coordination among different units of an organization. To develop organizational health by continuous renewal of individual capabilities keeping pace with in technological change.

Role of HRD
Increase morale and motivation of employee . Enabling organizational culture. Profit enhancer. Performance enhancement.

Significance of HRD
Economic development Increase in Entrepreneurial activity Increase in productivity Counteracting social Taboos Human rights Profitability

Significance of HRD
Significance of HRD in an organization can be appreciated when we consider the fast changing environment coupled with technological change and intensified competition. Significance of HRD can further be appreciated when we consider different sub-system of HRD like performance appraisal, career planning and development ,manpower planning, management succession and development training, organizational development, quality of work life.
