Nursing Shortage

By Nicole Jones

Objective
To teach students about how the nursing shortage affects other nurse, staff, the patients and the community

Effects on other Nurses

Because some hospitals have had to cut budgets, fewer nurses have been hired, leaving less nurses to do more. This leaves nurses physically exhausted and emotionally drained because of an increased patient load and the conditions under which they must work.

Effects on other Nurses

Because nurses have a bigger patient load, more nurses are opting out of the nursing shortage due to job dissatisfaction, making the shortage worse. Nursing shortages and turnover rates have been reported to be the highest in critical care facilities, because nurses have to work longer hours and have to care for more patients then they feel they can safely care for.

Effects on the Patients

With a 20 % vacancy rate, there are currently not enough nurses to care for patients in the acute care setting, causing a potential deterioration in patient care. The shortage has increased patient death rates, patient safety concerns and has affected how the hospital detects complications in patients.

Effects on the Patients

Many medical errors are made because there are not enough nurses and they can be prevented by increasing the number of nurses.

Effects on the Community

Because studies have shown that an inadequate quantity of skilled nurses in clinical settings has a significant negative impact on patient outcomes, including mortality, the nursing shortage is literally taking lives, and impairing the health and wellbeing of many millions of the worlds people.

Effects on other Staff

The nursing shortage could cause less funding for other education programs for physicians in training because of the need for more nurses and more funding to get more nurses. Physician workload may also increase due to more medical errors made by the nurses.
