Digital Retinal Imaging We offer the Canon CR-2 Plus Retinal Imaging as an important part of our eye exams. The Canon CR-2 Plus image is as unique as you fingerprint and provides us with a look at the health of your retina. The retina is the part of your eye that captures the image of what you are looking at, similar to film in a camera.

What is dry eye? Dry Eye disease is a condition where the eyes cannot

produce the right quantity or quality of tears. Up to 30 percent of people suffer from Dry Eye disease and in Dr. Farrahs clinical experience; it is one of the main reasons for coming in for an eye examination. Testing Dr. Farrah can check for the signs and symptoms of Dry Eye disease at her eye centre in Calgary using several quick and painless tests to measure visual clarity, tear production, ocular surface dryness and damage to the cornea or conjunctiva (the membrane that lines the eyelids), in addition to patient questionnaires to measure symptoms. These tests will allow her to determine the severity of the dry eye and determine the appropriate treatment option customized for you.

Treatment options Includes a combination of: lifestyle changes, over-thecounter treatments, prescription treatments and surgery. RESTASIS is the only Canadian labeled approved eye drop demonstrated to treat the underlying cause of Dry Eye disease. RESTASIS is indicated for the treatment of moderate to moderately severe Dry Eye disease. It helps increase the eyes natural ability to produce tears, which may be reduced by inflammation due to Dry Eye disease. It is the only prescription eye drop believed to treat the underlying cause of Dry Eye disease.

Glaucoma affects 250,000 Canadians but only half of

them know that they have it. It is the second most common cause of vision loss in people over 65. Your risk of developing glaucoma increases with each decade after age 40 from around 1% in your 40s to up to 12% in your 80s. There a variety of tests to check for glaucoma. At our office, we measures pressure inside the eye (intraocular pressure); corneal evaluation; angle evaluation, and examining the retina and optic nerve at the back of the eye.

The Canon CR-2 Plus Digital Retinal Imaging provides: A high resolution image of the retina including the optic nerve, macula

and the health of the blood vessels allowing for the confirmation of a healthy eye vs. detection of disease. A permanent record for your file, which allows us to view your images each year to look for changes. The opportunity for you to view and discuss the image of your eye with your doctor at the time of your exam. Special feature Fundus Autofluorescence (FAF) imaging: Helps with Geographic Atrophy, Macular Degeneration, Glaucoma, Diabetic Retinopathy and other conditions that can affect vision may also be identified and monitored using FAF mode. These Metabolic changes at the level of photoreceptor/RPE complex may not be visualized by other routine imaging techniques.

diabetic retinal examinations

Everyone living with diabetes, whether type 1 or type 2,

is at risk of developing diabetic retinopathy and vision loss. The risk increases the longer a person has diabetes and the more advanced it is. People with type 1 diabetes are more likely to experience vision loss sooner than those with type 2 diabetes. Early detection is key to preventing vision loss so have your eyes examined yearly.

cataract management
More than 2.5 million Canadians have cataracts. They are

painless, develop within the existing lenses in your eyes, and are usually detected during routine eye exams. >> Treatment: If glasses are not able to correct the vision, we will refer you to an Ophthalmologist for evaluation of the cataract. If surgery is required, the surgeon will remove your clouded lens and replace it with a clear, plastic intraocular lens (IOL). If you need cataracts removed from both eyes, surgery usually will be done on only one eye at a time. An uncomplicated surgical procedure lasts only about 20 minutes.

About Dr. Farrah

Dr. Farah Sunderji is the past president of the Calgary

Society of Optometrists (CSO) for the past two years. She is an active member of the Alberta Association of Optometrists and sits on the Occupational Vision Care (OVC) committee. She is passionate about Dry Eyes and gives lectures to her fellow colleagues across the province. She has completed a certificate of excellence in fitting multifocal contact lenses as part of the Johnson and Johnson Presbyopia Partnership.

About Dr. Eliza

Dr. Eliza obtained her Optometry degree from Aston

University in Birmingham, England and received her Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Alberta. After completing the Optometric Bridging program from the University of Waterloo in 2005, she became Canadian Board Certified. She has been practicing Optometry for the past 11 years.
