Scene 2 : Mrs. Omi Mrs. Omi, 75 year old, brought by her grandson to the clinic with complaints after two days that she could not get up of bed after falling in the bathroom and his grandmother also refused to eat. Her grandson tells about the incident to the doctor, because grandmothers hearing had been decreased significantly. The doctor listened attentively and nodded his head several times. Then after asking permission to the grandmother, the doctor performs the examination by showing empathy to the grandmother who looked in pain. Doctors said there has been a fracture of the collum femoris dextra on Mrs. Omi. Because the grandmother looked tired and weak, the doctor asked the nurse to help him prepare the infusion. Then the doctor
gave the receipt to Mrs. Omis grandson. After the grandmothers condition
get well, doctor refers to the nearest hospital. Before that, it is better to
negotiate first with the child and her nephew, because perhaps the grandmother would likely be operated. After providing care to the Mrs. Omi, the doctor went to the subdistrict office to show a lecture about how HIV transmission in high school students in these districts. This presentation is about HIV/AIDS day. As a medical student, how does a doctor do an effective communication with patients and other relevant personnel?

Effective communication between doctor and patient is about how doctors are able to: 1. Analyze patient complaints. 2. Respect the rights of patients. 3. Foster social sense of the patient. Why a doctor have empathy to the patient? A doctor has a sense of empathy toward patients so that patients feel valued, feel comfortable in submitting complaints.

The differences in verbal communication with non-verbal communication: 1. Verbal communication is communication with the audiovisual. 2. Non-verbal communication is message with signs, gestures. How does a doctor show his empathy? How to show a sense of empathy: 1. Eye contact. 2. Don't be rush. 3. Encourage patients to speak. 4. Show interest. 5. Give full attention to the patient.

Health center can serve as a reference for the initial stages of the illness. If the patient is not capable of being treated in the new health centers refer patients to hospital. What are informations that must be obtained by a doctor ,patient, and medical staff? Information obtained from a physician (perceived symptoms of patients).

Barriers to effective communication: 1. Physiological: disabled, elderly. 2. Psychological: mental illness, patients feeling. 3. Culture: language. How is the role of receipt as communication model between doctor and patient? Prescribing role in effective communication is: a recipe as a medium of communication through writing.

Adjust to the cultural imperative. So that we can assure our role as physicians as well. We must also respect and appreciate the patient.
