ASHRAE Research & Research Promotion

Background of ASHRAE Research

Since 1919, research has been the core of ASHRAEs existence ASHRAE Research is the largest program of fundamental and applied research supported by a technical society
Currently 60+ active research projects, 40+ projects approved for further development 55 percent of research is conducted by universities; 45 percent is conducted by private research or engineering firms Payments to active projects range between $2.5-3 million per year

Importance of ASHRAE Research

Improves the way building systems work and the way in which they are applied Allows development of technical information to create standards and guidelines, which serve as the basis for testing and design practices around the world ASHRAE funds projects addressing topics such as sound, duct design, the effect of oil in refrigerants, load calculations, thermal conductivity, simplified energy analysis procedures, weather data, refrigerant property data, fire and smoke control and solar design. 845 research projects valued at $67.5 million conducted since 1960

Examples of ASHRAE Research Projects

Indoor Environmental Effects on the Performance of School Work by Children The Impact of Household Refrigerator Storage Conditions on Shelf-Life of Fruits and Vegetables Calculating the Seasonal Efficiency of Commercial Heating Systems Ventilation and Indoor Air Quality in Retail Stores Comparison of Open and Glass-Door Vertical Display Cases for Energy Savings and Customer Preference

The Lasting Effects of ASHRAE Research on the Industry

Created a comfort zone chart in 1922 Developed of the effective temperature scale to incorporate humidity and air movement in the equation for human comfort Created a new psychometric chart in 1961 Published Laboratory Design Guide Prepared a toolkit for building load calculations Updated the tables of design weather conditions in the 2013 ASHRAE Handbook Fundamentals

Who Funds ASHRAE Research?

Research Promotion (RP) raises funds to support Research, which come from:
Donations from individuals, companies and organizations Income from AHR Exposition held

Every dollar collected for Research is spent on research projects RP consistently raises over $2 million in funds every year

Who Funds ASHRAE Research?

How are funds raised?
By personal contacts between RP committee volunteers and potential contributors By direct solicitation of members at the time of dues billing By self-generated contributions by corporations and individuals
