Cell Reference and Formulae

Session Objectives
After this session, you will be able to Apply Cell Reference to the given data. Differentiate between Formule and Functions. Insert Functions in the given data. Use AutoSum functions in the given datasheet. Analyse the use of Recently Used functions in Excel.

Cell Reference and Formulae

Cell Referencing
Identifies the location a cell or a group of cells in the spreadsheet. Also referred to as a cell address. Consists of the column letter and row number that intersect at the cell's location

Cell Reference and Formulae

Cell Reference Types
A cell can be referenced in three ways: 1) Relative 2) Aboslute 3) Mixed

Using the correct type of cell reference ensures that formulae work as expected when you copy them to another location in the worksheet.

Cell Reference Types
Reference Type Relative =A1 Formula What Happens After Copying the Formula Both the column letter A and the row number 1 can change.

Absolute

=$A$1

The column letter A and the row

number 1 do not change.

Mixed

=$A1

The column letter A does not change. The row number 1 can change.

Mixed

=A$1

The column letter A can change. The row number 1 does not change.

Check Your Knowledge!

What do you mean by Formulas in Excel? How do they help in day-to-day life? What type of formulas have you used? What is the difference between formulas and functions?

Cell Reference and Formulae

Formulae
Formulas in spreadsheet programs such as Excel are used to Perform Calculations. Formulas can range from basic mathematical operations to complex engineering and statistical calculations. Begin with an equal ( = ) sign and, for the most part, they are entered into to the worksheet cell(s) where we want the results or answer to appear.

Difference in Formulae and Functions
Functions Functions are preset formulas that are included in the Excel application. Many times a function will simplify the formulas that you would otherwise enter manually. The best way to construct a Functions perform calculations formula is to use cell references by using specific values, called instead of typing numbers in the the arguments. formula. Excel automatically updates the results when you change values in the referenced cells. Formulas Formulas are instructions for performing calculations.

Example: Manually enter a formula type:

=E4+E5+E6+E7+E8+E9+E10+E11+ E12+E13+E14+E15.

Example: SUM function to add the values would be: =SUM(E4:E15)

Activity 2
Objective: Identify the steps to Insert a function. Type: Individual Duration: 10 minutes

Task: Refer to Activity2 sheet and perform the tasks as mentioned in it.

AutoSum Function

The AutoSUM button, located on the Standard Toolbar, is a shortcut provided for using the SUM function. Clicking on the AutoSUM button, the SUM function is entered into the active cell.

Activity 3
Objective: Use AutoSum functions in the given datasheet. Analyse the use of Recently Used functions in Excel. Type: Individual Duration: 15 minutes

Task: Refer to Activity3 sheet and perform the tasks as mentioned in it.
