History of Brazil

Following three centuries under the rule of Portugal, Brazil became an independent nation in 1822. By far the largest and most popular country in South America, Brazil overcame more than half a century of military intervention in the governance of the country when in 1985 the military regime peacefully ceded, power to civilian rulers.

Federal law also has the exclusive authority to rule on matters such as expropriation, energy, telecommunications, insurance, foreign trade, nationality and citizenship. Besides the Federal Constitution, the main legal documents in Brazil are the Codes. The most important are the Civil Code, the Tax Code, the Penal Code and the Civil Procedure Code.
