DETAILED DIAGRAM OF HUMAN DIGESTIVE SYSTEM

Human Digestive System

DIGESTION: The process of breaking down food into simpler molecules is called digestion. After the process of digestion , food is carried to the different parts of the body by blood . It is then used to produce energy and build new cells.

1. MOUTH 2. SALIVARY GLANDS

MOUTH:
The process of digestion begins in the mouth . After the food enters the mouth , your teeth chew the food and breakdown the food particles into smaller pieces.

SALIVARY GLANDS: The saliva or spit makes the food soft and easy to swallow. Saliva contains the enzyme amylase that breaks starch into sugar.

OESOPHAGUS: Once you swallow the food, it enters a tube called the food pipe, which is about 10 inches long. It connects the mouth to an important organ, i.e. stomach. Once the food has entered the food pipe, the muscles of the wall of the food pipe slowly contract and expand allowing the food to make its way into the stomach.

Stomach Spleen

LIVER: Liver produces enzymes to digest carbohydrates, fats and proteins. It produces Bile, which is stored in Gall Bladder.

GALL BLADDER:

The main purpose of the gallbladder is to store bile, or gall. The gallbladder is part of the biliary system and serves as a reservoir for bile, which is produced by the liver. The liver produces the bile and then it flows through the bile ducts into the gallbladder

STOMACH:

PANCREAS:

SPLEEN:

The stomach is like a food processor. It churns the food, mixing it with acid and digestive enzymes. The enzymes change the food into simple forms that our body can absorb and use. When the food becomes a thick liquid called chyme, it is poured into the small intestine.

Absorption of food takes place in the pancreas. The pancreas is also a digestive organ, secreting pancreatic juice containing digestive enzymes that assist digestion and absorption of nutrients in the small intestine.

Spleen is brownish in color and is located in the left upper quadrant of the abdomen.

Anus

SMALL INTESTINE: The small intestine is a long tube. All curled around. It is about 1.5 inches thick and 20-30 feet long, if stretched out.. The process of digestion is done by some enzymes that come to the small intestine from three other parts of the digestive system, liver, pancreas and Gall Bladder. They provide enzymes to digest carbohydrates, fats and proteins. In the small intestine only the simple form of food is absorbed into the blood and carried to various parts of the body.

LARGE INTESTINE: The large intestine is about 2.5 inches thick and 5 feet long. Here, mainly absorption of water from the food waste takes place. Though at this stage, almost all nutrients from the food have been absorbed, yet there will be some parts of food that our body cannot use. This undigested waste stays here until it is thrown out.

RECTUM: Stores solids. undigested

ANUS: Excretion of undigested food takes place here.
