Informal Requests
Can and Will
Can/Will + V1

Use can and will for less formal requests. Example: Can you turn the stereo down?

Formal Requests
Could and Would
Could/Would + V1

Use could and would to make formal requests (ask someone to do something). Could and would soften requests and make them more polite.

Example: Would you please keep the noise down?

Requests with Please


Modal + V1 + please? Modal + please + V1

Use please to make a request more polite. Note the word order.

Example:
Could you leave the door open, please?

Could you please leave the door open?

Would you mind... ?


Would you mind + gerund Would you mind + If + S + V2

Use would you mind to make polite requests.


Example: Would you mind turning the stereo down? Would you mind if I borrowed your book?

Affirmative Answers to Requests


When we say yes to a request, we usually use

expressions such as: Sure Certainly Of course, and No problem.

Example: A : Would you help me read this? B : Of course, i will help you.

Negative Answers to Requests

When we cannot say yes to a request, we usually apologize and give an explanation.

Example: A : Can you help me with my homework?


B : Sorry, Im not very good at French.

When we answer this type of request with Not at all, it means that we will do what the person requests. Example: A : Would you mind looking over my assignment? B : Not at all.
