V5 Interface

• An open interface between Local

Exchange (LE) and Access Network (AN)
based on 2048 Kbps
• A message based protocol, which means
that an event such as on-hook, translates
to sending of a message
• Subscriber signals are multiplexed in one
or more communication channels
• Supports wired connectivity, WLL and
FILL on sub side
• Two types of V5 interface: V5.1 & V5.2
Differences between V5.1 & V5.2
• V5.1 use only one 2048 Kbps link whereas V5.2
may use up to sixteen 2048 Kbps links on one
interface
• V5.1 does not support concentration whereas
V5.2 is designed to support concentration using
BCC protocol
• V5.1 uses pre-allocated bearer channels
whereas bearer channels are dynamically
allocated on a call basis on demand for the use
on V5.2 interface
Differences between V5.1 & V5.2
• V5.1 does not support ISDN Primary
Rate Access user ports whereas V5.2 does
• V5.1 does not have communication
channel protection whereas V5.2
supports it when using more than one
2048 Kbps links
• V5.2 supports link control protocol to
mange multiple links whereas V5.1 does
not

V5 Interface - Access supported

• Analogue telephone access

• ISDN Basic rate access
• ISDN Primary rate access (in V5.2 only)
• Other analogue or digital accesses for
semi-permanent connections
Functions of AN & LE
AN LE

V5.2
Functions of LE
• Call processing (switching)
• Provision of tones
• Charging related functions
• Bearer channel assignment and release
• Protection switching of communication
channels
Functions of AN
• Physical connections of subscriber lines
• Convert subscriber line signals into
PSTN messages
• Digit evaluation in case of rotary dialling
• Test / alarm for subscriber lines
V5.2 Interface –Protocol supported
V5.2 consists of procedural aspects that
controls channel allocation , connection
forming, information transferring and
disconnection between AN & LE.
Protocols supported are
 Control Protocols
 Signalling Protocols
V5.2 Interface – Control protocols
• Common control & Port control
• Link control
• Bearer Channel Connection (BCC)
• Protection
V5.2 Interface – Signalling
protocols
• PSTN signalling
• ISDN signalling
Common control & Port control
Used to exchange the individual port
status and control functions required to
coordinate for call control procedures in
LE.
 Port Control: Block/unblock for user ports

 Common control: Check of provisioning

variant and Interface ID. Ensures proper
functioning of the entire V5.2 interface
Link control
 Used for multi-link management to
control link identification, link
blocking/unblocking and link failure
conditions
Protection protocol
 Operates on two separate data links for
security reasons and manages the
protection switching of communication
channels in case of 2048 Kbps link
failures in multi-link environment. A
communication path may carry
information associated to several 2048
Kbps links. The failure of a C-path could
therefore impact the services of a large
number of customers in adverse ways.
BCC protocol
 Establishes and de-establishes bearer
connection dynamically on a specific
2048 Kpbs link to user ports on a call by
call basis on demand, under the control
of LE
 Provides concentration capability within
AN
 Provides timeslot assignment/release for
user port
Signalling protocols
 PSTN signalling protocol :Handles
signalling information from analog
subscriber

 ISDN – D Protocol : Handles signalling

for ISDN basic rate access subscribers

 ISDN – P Protocol : Handles packet data

for ISDN basis rate access subscribers
Allocation of protocols
• All control protocols shall always be allocated
to TS16 of the Primary Link and TS16 of the
Secondary Link is used for protection of all
control protocols
• Protection group 1 always consists of TS16 of
the primary Link and TS16 of the Secondary
Link
• Protection group 2 consists of logical C-
Channels on a link and equal number of logical
C-Channels on standby link
Protection group

ISDN-P

Group 1 Group 2

It is not mandatory to create two protection groups

Time slot allocation
• Time slots TS16, 15 & 31 of each 2048 Kbps
link may be used as physical communication
channels with TS16 being the first choice.
• TS15 & 31 will be used a communication
channels if needed.
• Time slots not provisioned as physical
communication channels (C-channel) are used
as bearer channels under the control of BCC
protocol
• First and the second links carrying C-channel
on TS16 are called Primary and Secondary
Links respectively
Allocation of PSTN & ISDN
protocols
• PSTN protocol is allocated to only one logical
C-channel i.e. TS16 of the Primary link or any
other logical C-channel on any of 2048 Kbps
link except the Secondary link.
• ISDN protocol is allocated to one or more
logical C-channels i.e. TS16 of the Primary link
and other logical C-channels on many of 2048
Kbps link except the Secondary link.

Rules for V 5.2 Connection to EWSD

The Maximum 8 PCM 30 routes of a V 5.2

interface are called V5 LINK and are distributed
between 2 LTGs. Possible configurations: 2 , 4 , 6 , or
8 V 5 LINK per V 5.2 interface.

Each V 5 LINK consist of timeslots which are

reserved as user channels BCH ( max. 31 )
Furthermore , timeslots can be reserved for
signalling between A N and EWSD. Those are
called communication channels CCH ( max. 3 , Time
slots 15 , 16 , and 31 ).

An V 5.2 interface has a Max. Total of 8

Communication Channels.
These must be distributed uniformly between
the two LTGs., otherwise the V 5.2 interface can not be
activated ( Verification by CONF V 5 LINK ).

The max. 8 time slots, which are reserved as

CCH must first be created, without neglecting uniform
distribution in the two LTG, in the timeslot 16 of
the existing PCM30 routes.
Of the max. 8 timeslots which are defined as
CCH , half are created as active signalling channels.
Hence there are max. 4 so- called active logical
Communication channels CMCHAN
Each CMCHAN gets the following
characteristics :
V5 CHAN ID : Unique identification number
within the V 5.2 interface.
V5 CM PATH : list of the communication
PROTOCOLS which pass through.

The other CCH are standby and are available

for switch over in case of the failure of a
CMCHAN
At switch over a CM CHAN changes to CCH , i.e.
Changes the PCM timeslots. The CM CHAN retains
all its characteristics in the process ( V 5 CHAN ID
and the list of transported PROTOCOLS )
The expansion or reduction of the number of
communication channels is possible during
operation ( be sure to observe the rules
regarding the distribution of communication
channels in the LTG and timeslots ). The V5
LINK concerned must , however, be blocked for
this.
The expansion of the number of V5 LINKs is also
possible during operation. Then it is permitted to use
timeslot 16 on this link as a user channel when timeslots
15 / 31 of the V5 LINKs already available are used
together with timeslot 16 as communication channels.
