freedom of mankind, while upholding the ethical
and moral standards rooted in biblical scriptures.

Biographical Facts

Born May 18, 1920 in Poland

Lost his sister before he was born, At age 8 his mother died,
his brother died 4 years later. At 20, his father died.

Loss of his homeland to the Nazis

1940 –44 worked in a stone quarry and chemical plant.

 In 1942, starts studying in secret for the priesthood

(1958) As bishop of Krakow, succeeds as despite Communist

world political order, to a democratic sympathizer,
is due to the visionary leadership of John Paul II.

Conclusion
♦ Pope John Paul was a rebel with a cause. A
champion of human worth and dignity, a freedom
fighter, a torch bearer for social justice, he left a
lasting legacy of leadership and moral example
that the world can follow. Asked once if he feared
retaliation from government officials, he said “I’m
not afraid of them. They are afraid of me.” Indeed,
he relayed a message to the world that will echo
throughout eternity: “BE NOT AFRAID!”
