To establish which type of coating should be applied where requires an understanding of: The capabilities of each product technology type, and that of the specific product
We can develop a generalised set of advantages and disadvantages for each product type.
eg - Alkyds

A specification is therefore developed to combine paints with these properties such as a Coal Tar Epoxy primer followed by an Self Polishing Copolymer Antifouling.
Coating Selection
The use of the wrong paint on the wrong job can have serious implications, and can be expensive and time consuming to rectify. The following must be considered: Price comparison on Rupees/L vs Rupees/m2 basis Loss factors Scheme Comparison Cost Benefit Analysis Paint compatibility
Coating Selection
Consider some of the following.. - What is the substrate? (Steel, Aluminium etc)
- In-service environment? (Coastal, Highly polluted industrial etc) - Chemical resistance? (chemicals factory etc) - Long-term gloss retention? (PU vs Epoxy)
- Life expectancy? (Be realistic)
Coating Selection
Consider some of the following.. - Surface preparation? (Be realistic)
- In service temperature? Most paints limited to 100120oC - Application temperature? Below 5oC epoxy curing slows - Contractor quality? (If poor, why spend a lot on paint!)
- HSE issues? (Legislation in some countries may differ)
