BRAIN TEASER

Two deaths
Bob and Mary were found dead. The Inspector went to the house and wrote this in his journal: -There was glass all around the bodies -There were water stains in the carpet around them -There was a table next to them -The Family cat was looking at the bodies upon the Inspectors entry The autopsy report showed this: -Bob and Mary died from 2 things 1. from shock 2. from loss of oxygen

What happened?

Whats the lesson title?

3 main organ systems involved in respiration!

Which organ systems Gets glucose from food? Gets oxygen from air and removes CO2? Takes O2 and glucose to cells? How do we measure the energy content of food? Energy released is used for 3 things in our body, what are they?

How do O2 and CO2 move in and out of cells?

Mitochondria: Draw one, where are these found in our body? Extension: Why are they found here?

2 raw materials?

Aerobic respiration
Men generally need more food because

2 waste products? Test for CO2? Can you write a word equation?

Which cells have lots of mitochondria & lots of respiration?

Glucose is stored in the liver as glycogen, this is converted back to glucose when exercising, why?

Objectives
Be able to;

To understand what happens during the process of aerobic respiration and where it takes place in the cell
Be able to describe the difference between aerobic and anaerobic respiration Explain the effects of a lack of oxygen on muscle activity

Recap- Mitochondria
Where respiration occurs

Are organelles and are found in our cells

Experiment tasks and questions:

Plot this data as a graph. Describe the trends show in the graph. Use your rules! What effect did rest periods have on lifting performance? Explain what may have caused these trends by considering any substances that may have been used up in the muscle, and the process that was using them. Describe the physical observations of the subject during the investigation. Explain what may have caused these symptoms by considering another substance that may have been produced in the muscle and the process that was producing it.

Respiration
There are two types of respiration, Aerobic needs oxygen and happens in cells when glucose reacts with oxygen. Anaerobic - does not need oxygen. It happens when there is not enough oxygen for aerobic respiration

EXIT QUESTIONS
Write down the equations for both types of respiration Why does the body need both types?

Explain a muscle cramp.............
