What is a remedial activity?


A remedial activity is one that is designed to help learners overcome gaps & errors in their English, especially fossilized errors... Targets learners with difficulties in specific areas. teaches basic skills that are the foundation for learning a subject in greater detail, and such skills must be learned before students can develop a detailed understanding of the topic of study.

Teachers attitudes towards remedial work


For some trs its : an unattrative/ even depressingpart of language teaching & learning associated with failure to learn done just in preparation for tests

Other teachers believe that its: new work on old language an interesting challenge, requiring ingenuity & creativity

Purpose of remedial work


Enable learners to : acquire skills/overcome problems in English thro alternative activities
using methods & materials suited to their ability & interest.

receive individual/grp teaching according to their mental development notice their mistakes & discover for themselves what is wrong and right. reactivate, consolidate & clarify previously presented language items

Drilling : make it fun by using songs, verses & chants, games - element of repetition must be present - practising what theyve learned before but in different ways

Personalised remedial work :
Extra exercises as homework Doing corrections spelling, dictation, etc Rewriting of marked compositions 1-to-1 attention Reminder : this shouldnt be the ONLY type of remedial activity

Some implications for teaching remedial work


Be patient Be positive Make it enjoyable & statisfying Use varied & appropriate activities Get learner output & provide feedback

When & how to do remedial work..


When the need arises During the lesson - when the teacher notices the learner(s) having problem in following what is being taught After the lesson (the following lesson) - as a class - in groups for those with problems - personalised attention

Lets say youre teaching this Phonics song but you notice the learners are having problems

Finally..
When our children are born, we hope they will be normal, average children. Unfortunately this does not always happen.. They may have limitations, lack concentration They may have difficulty in learning to read, spell or write they often need remedial work..
What to do with pupils who do not need remedial work? Give them enrichment activities!

What is an ENRICHMENT activity?


According to Teare(1997) : A higher quality of work than the norm for the age group Work covered in more depth Extension of learning- relating to new areas Promotes a higher level of thinking The inclusion of additional subject areas and/or activities The use of supplementary materials beyond the normal range of resources.

What does ENRICHMENT involve?


staying with a topic/ skill & developing it in depth extending to wider context relating learning to new areas and/or providing pupils with experiences outside the regular curriculum (breadth).

Examples of enrichment activities

Read the chant with suitable actions. Vocabulary work What colour are you? refers to our ethnic origin. Look up the dictionary for other meanings of the colours in the poem yellow, blue, black Surf the internet for a poem on Malaysia & share it with the class

When & how to consider enrichment?


Separate lesson Self-directed projects Homework enrichment Access to enrichment materials (library / internet)
