The Gospel of Salvation

02/15/08 Oil Station Discipleship School 5

•Ephesians 1:13 In
Him, you also, after
listening to the
message of truth, the
gospel of your
salvation--having also
believed, you were
sealed in Him with the
Holy Spirit of promise,

•Romans 1:16 For I am
not ashamed of the
gospel, for it is the
power of God for
salvation to everyone
who believes, to the
Jew first and also to the
Greek.

•Acts 13:26 "Brethren,
sons of Abraham's
family, and those
among you who fear
God, to us the message
of this salvation has

So what is salvation?

02/15/08 Oil Station Discipleship School 9

•Popularized today in Christian
denominations, many think salvation is the
event of just getting to heaven.

•However, salvation is not just for us, it is

for God as well.

•Revelation 7:10 and they cry out with a

loud voice, saying, "Salvation to our God
who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb.“

•So, salvation is not just for us. God wants

a people for his possession.
02/15/08 Oil Station Discipleship School 10
•So our thinking in terms of
salvation needs to be God-
centered, not man-centered.

•We need to ask ourselves…

why did God save us?

•He saved us for himself

Salvation has both a
present and a future
aspect

02/15/08 Oil Station Discipleship School 13

•To understand the present and
future aspect of our salvation we
need to ask this question.
•Did Jesus expect to get something in
return for the sacrifice he made?
•The answer is yes.

•Titus 2:14-15 who gave Himself for

us to redeem us from every lawless
deed, and to purify for Himself a
people for His own possession,
zealous for good deeds. (15) These
02/15/08 Oil Station Discipleship School 14
things speak and exhort and reprove
•By the preceding verse, we know that Jesus
expected 2 things from his sacrifice.
•He expected to “redeem” us. Redeem
comes from the Greek word
•λυτρόω
•lutroō
•loo-tro'-o
•From G3083; to ransom (literally or
figuratively): - redeem.
•It is slave language typically used of
buying someone that can’t afford to pay
their debts out of bondage. You then
became the slave of another. So Jesus
expected to purchase us by paying our sin
debt and then make us a slave of
righteousness.
02/15/08 Oil Station Discipleship School 15
•The Bible often describes
salvation as a future
aspect, not here yet.

•But salvation does have a

present aspect to it

02/15/08 Oil Station Discipleship School 16

•Luke 19:9-10 And Jesus
said to him, "Today
salvation has come to this
house, because he, too, is
a son of Abraham. (10)
"For the Son of Man has
come to seek and to save
that which was lost."
02/15/08 Oil Station Discipleship School 17
• Referencing Titus 2: 14 –
15, Jesus could see that
Zaccheus had repented,
believed, and was zealous
for good deeds.

02/15/08 Oil Station Discipleship School 18

• 2 Corinthians 6:2 for He
says, "AT THE ACCEPTABLE
TIME I LISTENED TO YOU,
AND ON THE DAY OF
SALVATION I HELPED YOU."
Behold, now is "THE
ACCEPTABLE TIME," behold,
now is "THE DAY OF
SALVATION"--
02/15/08 Oil Station Discipleship School 19
• 2 Timothy 1:9 who has
saved us and called us with
a holy calling, not
according to our works, but
according to His own
purpose and grace which
was granted us in Christ
Jesus from all eternity,
02/15/08 Oil Station Discipleship School 20
• Titus 3:5 He saved us, not
on the basis of deeds which
we have done in
righteousness, but
according to His mercy, by
the washing of
regeneration and renewing
by the Holy Spirit,
02/15/08 Oil Station Discipleship School 21
• So when we believe
through faith, according to
the Scriptures, we are
saved.

02/15/08 Oil Station Discipleship School 22

•According to
Scripture, salvation is
also an ongoing
activity, not a one
time experience.
02/15/08 Oil Station Discipleship School 23
• 1 Corinthians 15:1-2 Now I
make known to you, brethren,
the gospel which I preached to
you, which also you received,
in which also you stand, (2)
by which also you are saved, if
you hold fast the word which I
preached to you, unless you
believed in vain.
02/15/08 Oil Station Discipleship School 24
• Colossians 1:21-23 And although
you were formerly alienated and
hostile in mind, engaged in evil
deeds, (22) yet He has now
reconciled you in His fleshly body
through death, in order to present
you before Him holy and blameless
and beyond reproach-- (23) if
indeed you continue in the faith
firmly established and steadfast,
and not moved away from the hope
of the gospel that you have heard,
which was proclaimed
02/15/08 in all
Oil Station Discipleship School 25
• By the preceding two
verses, it also states
clearly there is a
condition to this ongoing
activity of salvation

02/15/08 Oil Station Discipleship School 26

• Hebrews 7:25 Therefore
He is able also to save
forever those who draw
near to God through
Him, since He always
lives to make
intercession for them.

• KJV translation renders

• While the OT priests could

• Jesus has become the
perfect high priest.
02/15/08 Oil Station Discipleship School 28
Salvation has a future
aspect to it

02/15/08 Oil Station Discipleship School 29

• Romans 8:24-25 For in hope
we have been saved, but hope
that is seen is not hope; for
who hopes for what he already
sees? (25) But if we hope for
what we do not see, with
perseverance we wait eagerly
for it.

• 1 Thessalonians 5:1-10 Now as to the times and
the epochs, brethren, you have no need of
anything to be written to you. (2) For you
yourselves know full well that the day of the Lord
will come just like a thief in the night. (3) While
they are saying, "Peace and safety!" then
destruction will come upon them suddenly like
labor pains upon a woman with child, and they
will not escape. (4) But you, brethren, are not in
darkness, that the day would overtake you like a
thief; (5) for you are all sons of light and sons of
day. We are not of night nor of darkness; (6) so
then let us not sleep as others do, but let us be
alert and sober. (7) For those who sleep do their
sleeping at night, and those who get drunk get
drunk at night. (8) But since we are of the day,
let us be sober, having put on the breastplate of

• Note that wrath and salvation
are the 2 possible outcomes at
the day of the Lord.
• Some people identify this
verse as referring to the
tribulation, but there is no
biblical basis for this. Wrath is
associated with judgment at
the last day during Christ’s
return which is clarified in vs.
10 describing the resurrection.

02/15/08 Oil Station Discipleship School 35
• So there is a salvation we
have now, but there is also
an aspect of it that clearly
is future.

• It says we are kept

protected by the power of
God for this salvation

through faith.
• Faith compared to an electrical
outlet.
• There is an endless supply of
electricity available for our

02/15/08 Oil Station Discipleship School 38
• Important point – faith is
not a work; it’s a
surrender.

• As long as we put ourselves

in God’s hands, we have
assurance of salvation.

scriptures.

• Also, in the OT, Jewish people never
associated salvation with going to
heaven.
• Jewish people always associated
salvation as deliverance from their
oppressors.
• What the Jewish people failed to

oppressor was sin, not the then
current kingdom of Rome.

• Romans 7:14-25 For we know that the Law is spiritual,
but I am of flesh, sold into bondage to sin. (15) For
what I am doing, I do not understand; for I am not
practicing what I would like to do, but I am doing the
very thing I hate. (16) But if I do the very thing I do
not want to do, I agree with the Law, confessing that
the Law is good. (17) So now, no longer am I the one
doing it, but sin which dwells in me. (18) For I know
that nothing good dwells in me, that is, in my flesh; for
the willing is present in me, but the doing of the good
is not. (19) For the good that I want, I do not do, but I
practice the very evil that I do not want. (20) But if I
am doing the very thing I do not want, I am no longer
the one doing it, but sin which dwells in me. (21) I
find then the principle that evil is present in me, the
one who wants to do good. (22) For I joyfully concur
with the law of God in the inner man, (23) but I see a

against the law of my mind and making me a prisoner
of the law of sin which is in my members. (24)

of you says to them, "Go in peace, be warmed and be filled," and yet
you do not give them what is necessary for their body, what use is
that? (17) Even so faith, if it has no works, is dead, being by itself.
(18) But someone may well say, "You have faith and I have works;
show me your faith without the works, and I will show you my faith
by my works." (19) You believe that God is one. You do well; the
demons also believe, and shudder. (20) But are you willing to
recognize, you foolish fellow, that faith without works is useless?
(21) Was not Abraham our father justified by works when he offered
up Isaac his son on the altar? (22) You see that faith was working
with his works, and as a result of the works, faith was perfected;
(23) and the Scripture was fulfilled which says, "AND ABRAHAM
BELIEVED GOD, AND IT WAS RECKONED TO HIM AS
