What is Bluetooth?

 Wireless, short-range communication

 Replacement for USB cables.
Low power, low cost.

 Automatically hook together mobile devices.

History of Bluetooth
 Named after Harald Blaatand “Bluetooth”, a viking
king of Denmark 940-981 A.D.
 Invented in 1994 by L. M. Ericsson, Sweden.
 Bluetooth technology is founded by Ericsson, IBM,
Intel, Nokia and Toshiba in Feb 1998.
 Bluetooth two version have been released, version
1.0 and 1.1.
Features of Bluetooth
 Communicate at 2.4 GHz frequency.
 10-100 meter range.
– Class I – 100 meter (300 feet)
– Class II – 20 meter (60 feet)
– Class III – 10 meter (30 feet)

 1 Mbps data transfer rate.

 Simultaneous voice and data can be transfer.
Bluetooth Frequency
 2.45 GHz frequency is allocated by IRFA .

Communicates at 2.45 GHz frequency

Infra Red v/s Bluetooth
 Present wireless technology like infra red
data communication has two problems –

1) Line of Sight

2) One to One

 BLUETOOTH OVERCOMES THESE

PROBLEMS
Basic Working Idea

Bluetooth is a standard for tiny, radio

frequency chips that can be plugged
into your devices

These chips were designed to take

all of the information that your wires
normally send, and transmit it at a
special frequency to a receiver
Bluetooth chip

The information is then transmitted to

your device
Spread-Spectrum
Frequency Hopping
 Bluetoothuses a packet switching protocol based on a
technology called spread-spectrum frequency hopping
A device will use 79 individual randomly chosen
frequencies within a designated range, changing from
one to another on a regular basis.
 Range is from 2.402GHz to 2.480GHz, in steps of
1MHz.
 The frequency hopping is done at a rate of 1600 Hz.

Bluetooth Devices
Bluetooth will be enabled in everything from:
 Telephones
 Headsets
 Computers
 Cameras
 PDAs
 Cars
Usage Models
Voice/Data Access Points
 Connecting a computing
device to a communicating
device.
 Allows any device with a
bluetooth chip to connect to
the internet.
 Example- a notebook could
link to the internet using a
mobile phone as an access
point.
Usage models
Peripheral Interconnects
 Standard peripheral devices
like keyboard, headsets etc
working over a wireless link.
 The same device can be used
in multiple functions e.g a
headset can access phones
while in the office and can
interface with a cellular phone
when mobile.
Usage model
Personal Area Networking

 Allows dynamic formation

and breakdown of
“PICONETS”--ad-hoc
personal networks.
Future Usage
 Telecommunication

 Home Automation
 Home Entertainment/Games
 Networking

 Industrial Control
 Computing

 Medical

 Current Trials: Shopping Malls, Train Stations
