ASSESSMENT OF GINNING PERFORMANCE AND COTTON QUALITY BEFORE & AFTER GINNING

Introduction
Ethiopia has enormous potential for the production of cotton.

A study of the Ministry of Agriculture in 2008/09 indicates that there is 3,000,810 ha (approximately 3 million Ha) of land suitable for cotton production, Ginneries are cotton processing industries that act as a bridge between cotton cultivators and spinning mills.
The main purpose of ginning is to separate the lint

cotton from the seed. It is an important process which can retain the quality or deteriorate the quality of cotton depending upon the type of the machine used,

2. OBJECTIVES
Study cotton quality before and after ginning in

the various ginning factories in Ethiopia. To investigate problem areas on ginning machines that most affect fiber quality To help spinning factories to procure lint cotton at appropriate price from ginnery. Optimize their processes to produce high quality yarn and subsequently high quality fabric, garment, and other products Avoid over-spinning and under-spinning both of which are not admissible.

BACK GROUND AND JUSTIFICATION

Ranges of various cotton fibre properties in Ethiopia are

very narrow. Ethiopian textile factories are equipped with both ring as well as rotor spinning facilities and most of the factories have combing machines. As such, spinners need much wider range of fibres to utilize fully and economically their plants. At the moment, almost all factories use fibres with more or less similar characteristics to spin coarse to medium counts of yarn. Fine counts are not produced at all. The significant difference in short fibre percentage and length of ginned cotton over hand ginned cotton indicate rupture of fibres and therefore, some more detailed studies are required to investigate ginning performance.
