It is a way to tell a person what was expressed by another person. That means that instead of repeating the exact words of the speaker(direct speech),we transform it into an indirect way of saying it(reported speech).
Example: I am tired! He said that he was tired.
Several changes have to be done in the pronouns ,tense (backshift),and place and time expressions. Dont forget to eliminate quotation marks Structure :
VERB PLACE AND TIME EXPRESSION.
Affirmative:
I havent seen Pablo in months He told me that he hadnt seen Pablo in months. They said the weather is awful They said that the weather was awful
Negative:
We cant work today. They said that they couldnt work yesterday. I will not come tomorrow He told me that he wouldnt come the next day
Interrogative:
introduce ask and words like if or whether; no ? mark
The teacher asked me Do you understand? The teacher asked me if I understood. The salesman asked meAre you interested in buying this car? He asked me whether I was interested in buying this car.

Tim wandered along the path thinking aloud, "If I continue this diet I should lose twenty pounds by the end of" when BOOM! he bumped into another city dweller out for a day's walk in the park. "I'm terribly sorry", he apologized. "I was so caught up in my thoughts I didn't see you!" he managed to stammer. Smiling, Sheila said, "It's OK. Nothing's broken... No really, I wasn't watching my step either." Suddenly they both stopped making excuses and stared at each other. "Don't I know you from somewhere?" inquired Tim while Sheila exclaimed, "You're Tim, Jack's brother, aren't you?!" They both began to laugh as they had met each other the week before at a party that Jack had given. Still laughing, Tim suggested, "Why don't we have a cup a coffee and donut?" to which Sheila replied, "I thought you wanted to continue your diet!" They both were still laughing by the time they reached the Swimming Donut cafe.
