TURBOFAN

What is Turbofan ?
Designed as a compromised between the turboprop (fuel efficient but noisy) and turbojet (powerful yet thirsty) Has large internal propeller or ducted fan and two streams of air flowing in the engine. Main stream goes into all of the components like a turbojet The secondary flow passes through the fan and is either ducted through a second nozzle or mixed back with the main stream leaving the turbine.

Can be classified as:

Mixed or unmixed Low or high by pass Single, two or three spool With or without after burning Geared or ungeared Nuclear of non-nuclear

Characteristics:
Widely used today Capable of medium to high thrust Capable of supersonic speed Better fuel efficiency

THE WORKING

1. The fan will suck the air into compressor. 2. The compressor will squeeze and compress the air. 3. The air will be mixed with oil and burn inside the combustion chamber. 4. The air will be force out into the turbine and power the turbine to rotate. 5. The turbine will power the compressor to rotate. 6. The air will be blown outside the nozzle.

7. Only B747-400 from B747 family have afterburner.

8. Life span of an B747 aircraft - Average 25 to 30 years (large number of cycles) ** Others - 20 years (small number of cycles) 9. B747s engines are mixed nozzle
10. The 747-400 was touted as the fastest subsonic commercial airliner in service (913km/h). - Cruised at 0.85 Mach (85 % of the speed of sound) - Pratt & Whitney, generated the most powerful 747400 engine with 63,300 lb (28,712 kg) thrust each

Die!!!! Hahaha.. Just kidding ^^

Still able to proceed to your destination

A light 747 can stay with only two engines, but not a heavy one. The one engine is needed to power the hydraulics.

Then Why? why need 4 able engines?? Which mean a B747 still to fly with 3

engines.
