What have you learned from your audience feedback?

How did I get my results?

I created a Survey monkey questionnaire which is shown on my blog. I added a link to my final product page on my blog via my questionnaire. In order to allow my audience to look at all three of my products (music video, digipack and poster) before answering the questions. I sent out the questionnaire randomly to students ranging in my target audience; 13-18 year olds. I made sure I sent out fifteen questionnaires both to males and females, in order to make sure that the results are an accurate representation of the age group. However, only thirteen replied and nine of those replies were males. Therefore, the results will be slightly skewed. However, I feel that thirteen responses are more than enough to receive quality constructive feedback from. I sent this questionnaire out as well as doing a smaller more personal focus group which allowed me to get more in-depth results. This is seen on my blog. Whereas doing a questionnaire gave me more results that were not very in depth. So combining both the questionnaire and focus group video has given me a good understanding of what was successful and unsuccessful about the products.

I asked How many music videos do you watch a week? I did this to see what percentage of the audience asked fitted into my target audience. This was indies from 13-18 years old that watch 1-6 music videos a week. This question shows that the interviewees were predominantly in this target audience; with 92.31% saying that they watched 1-6 music videos.

I also asked are you a fan of the indie genre to see whether my interviewees fitted in directly with my target audience. However, only 62% where fans of the genre. This isnt too bad; out of the thirteen people who answered the questionnaire 8 of them are fans of the indie genre. This would conclude that the interviewees will supply me with the quality feedback I require

After having asked my interviewees how engaging is the opening of my music video and digipack I received some very pleasing results. Of the thirteen people who answered this question the mode was ten and the lowest mark given was five. This makes me believe that my music video and digipack were very successful. During the more personal focus group with the five students they agreed that the music video was engaging mostly due to the enigma codes that are generated at the start of the music video. They wanted to know more and find out why Jason is dancing. They also said that the digipack was engaging and caught the eye due to the pastel colours and geometric squares which draw them in towards the diamond. They then said they wanted to open it up and see what the inside looked like. This was a great success because the students were not all fans of the indie genre but found the indie patterns interesting and engaging. This makes me believe that stereotypical indie fans would also find the patterns and colours engaging.

To my relief the interviewees that I sent the questionnaire found the music video funny. This was exactly as I had hoped they would react to the music video. 31% gave the video 10 for its humour and the lowest was only six and this was only a response from one person out of the thirteen. My focus group were split on the comical side of the music video. They found the climaxing dance off scene hilarious. However, up to that point some of the students just found it weird that they were dancing. This is not what I expected to hear as I thought that they would find it funny throughout because the dancing was so outrageous. I think that they may not have found the dancing funny to begin with because it seemed to flow with the music so it was not standing out as much. Whereas at the dance off they just did random freestyle moves which would more likely appeal to them because they are just so random and surprising. But on the whole the students mostly found the music video funny. However, because the students all know the dancers in the video this could be a possible reason for why they found it comical. Hopefully, that is not the case and that the acting and editing combined have created this comical twist of a music video.

The genre of the song is indie and I tried to create a different music video that will stick to the indie culture; it is different. From my results I believe that I have done that; the average score out of ten was 8.5. This is what I expected, even though existing music videos contain dancing are common, they normally include females who are subjected to voyeurism to entertain a predominantly male audience. I have gone against that by using two heterosexual males who are dancing in a narrative based music video which will appeal to both males and females. I think that my interviewees agree with the ideology behind the video and indie culture. My focus group also agreed that it was original the way the dancers where jumping via the transitions from town to the 4 countryside setting. This made me realise that the transitions I used, which I thought where stereotypical of most music videos 3 were not at all. Instead they are entirely different and unique. This helped make my music video even more different and 2 original. Additionally, they said that the music video was extremely entertaining because it was so comical and original. Three of the 1 five students said that they would definitely share the music video on twitter because it was just so funny. Whereas, the other0 two said they would spread it through word-of-mouth. This is very pleasing because it has proven to me that my music video is funny and entertaining. The students are not all fans of the indie genre but to see that they would share it gives me great confidence that fans of the genre would.

The link between the song and music video is the reference to addiction throughout the lyrics of the song. Both the song and video are about addiction, the music video is about addiction to dance and the song is about addiction to drugs. I have twisted the lyrics to make an original music video. Additionally, the music is very upbeat which makes you want to dance and my video includes dancing; this is another link between the two. The link between my video and digipack is the symbolic meaning behind the camera; the 1980s invention of the video camera allowed Indies to go out and create their own music videos and express themselves through visuals of their music. This is shown in my video which is setting in a rural setting to connote the freedom they were given. My digipack also contains diamond which connotes power and my video includes a dance off for the power of the town, this is another reoccurring link between the two. My audience seemed to feel that the two did link but to as strongly as they could have. The average score for this question was only 6.8 this is the lowest out of all of my questions. To find out why the audience thought this I brought it up during my focus group video, and they said that to make the link stronger I could have included triangles in my music video. Possibly a trail of triangles are left behind each dancer as they dance. They felt that I needed to include something to do with geometric patterns or the pastel colours in order to link the digipack and music video more effectively. .

The poster, digipack and music video are all linked through the 1980s video camera and the symbolic meaning behind this which is explained on the following slide. Furthermore, the poster and digipack are linked through the use of the pastel colours as well as the use of geometric shapes. The average score for this question was 8.5 which is not what I was expecting. I felt that the audience would have found it harder to recognise the link between the video camera and music video without knowing the connotations between the two. When I asked my focus group this question they said that my posters key signifier of me holding a camera should be smaller. Then I should have put triangles coming out of the lens like I did in my digipack tot link the two more effectively. They also said that the saturated yellow filter on my music video also links with the yellow pastel colours used on the digipack and poster. I didnt realise this when I did it but looking back at it I can see the link there. One of the students also said that I should have used the same text on both the poster and digipack to link them. They were split on which text they preferred with some preferring the more geometric text on the digipack and other preferring the more curvy text on the poster. They said that out of all three products the poster was the weakest and my digipack was the strongest. They felt that the digipack was the most engaging product because they really wanted to see what the inside pattern was.

In Conclusion
I am very happy with the reaction and results I have received from my interviewees. The results were as I hopeful rather than expected. I have learnt a great deal about all three of my product through my feedback. I have learnt that my music video is original, funny and interesting. I have also learnt that my poster is my weakest product and what changes could be made to make it look more professional. Additionally, I have learnt that my products all link and motifs are consistent throughout, however there are still ways which I can improve the products further. By including triangles on both the poster and music video as well as making the key signifier smaller on the poster. I have learnt that my products successfully identify with indie culture and motifs throughout (use of pastel colours). This has allowed me successfully appeal to my target audience.
