Theme: LEARNING ABOUT LIVING THINGS

Learning area : 1.0 Plants

Duration : 1 hour Learning objectives : 1.1 How to identify the external features of the plants.
Learning outcomes : At the end of the teaching and learning session, pupils will be able to : (a) Identify external features of two plants. (b) Make a list of the external features of two plants. (c) Record the external features of two plants in a table. (d) Suggest two uses of their fruits.

Scientific skills / Thinking skills : - Observing, communicating, making conclusion, comparing and contrasting and predicting. Scientific values / Noble Values : - Appreciating living things. - Environment friendly. Resources : - The pictures of Oil Palm and Jatropha Curcas plants. - Worksheet 1

Induction set (5 minutes) Teacher asks 6 volunteers to label parts of plants.

Resources : Oil Palm and Jatropha Curcas pictures. SPS : Observing, communicating SV : Appreciating living things.

Development (50 minutes) Step 1 Teacher divide pupils into two groups : Group 1 : Oil Palm Group 2 : Jatropha Curcas Plant

Strategies : Brainstorming, Cooperative learning SPS : Communicating, observing SV : Appreciating living things.

Step 2 1. Ask pupils to identify and then list the external features of these plants . (a) Shape of leaf (b) Non-flowering or flowering plants (c) Woody stem or soft stem (d) Color of Fruit 2. Suggest a few uses of the fruits (eg. Cooking oil, soap, margarine, biodiesel etc.)

1. Teacher shows picture of CETREE van which runs on biodiesel.

Step 3

1. Pupils from each group present their findings based on their groups discussion.
2. Teacher distributes worksheet to each pupils.

Closure (5 minutes)

1. Pupils are asked to state the important facts that are learnt today.
2. Teacher explains the ways to differentiate types of plants according to their external features and also the usefulness of their fruits. SPS : Communicating, differentiate and making conclusion. SV : Appreciating living things.
