NVidia's TEGRA 4i

System on Chips for Mobile Devices

System on Chip(SoC):
A system on chip (SoC or SOC) is an integrated circuit (IC) that integrates all components of a computer or other electronic system into a single chip.

A typical SoC consists of:

A microcontroller, microprocessor or DSP core(s). Memory blocks

Peripherals
External interfaces including industry standards such as USB, FireWire, Ethernet

Voltage regulators and power management circuits.

SoCs Architecture

Mobile devices:

Smartphones Tablets Portable media players Personal digital assistants(PDAs) Blu-ray players DVD players

Hand-held Gaming consoles

Introducing Tegra 4i
Tegra is a system on a chip (SoC) series developed by NVidia for mobile devices
such as smartphones, personal digital assistants, and mobile Internet devices. The Tegra integrates an ARM architecture central processing unit (CPU), graphics processing unit (GPU) and memory controller onto one package. The series emphasizes low power consumption and high performance for playing audio and video.

The Tegra 4i (codenamed "Grey") was released on 19 February 2013 The NVIDIA Tegra 4i has one of the highest performing CPUs with a maximum
clock speed of 2,300 MHz. It has 5 core(s), resulting in extremely efficient multitasking when compared to dual core processors.

Power-Performance :
Most mobile device architectures are designed around a general purpose
CPU.

The CPU not only underperforms but also consumes excessive power for
todays mobile use cases.

Relying on a power hungry CPU either compromises battery life to offer

good performance or delivers substandard experiences.

The mobile challenge:

The two main challenges are:

High performance Low power consumption

The Solution:
NVidia's TEGRA Multi-Processor Architecture
Use of a heterogeneous multi-processor architecture . A heterogeneous multi-processor by definition consists of several processors
that are different in structure and function with each processor optimized for a specific purpose

Performance and Battery Life:

The following use cases illustrate battery life a user can expect from an NVIDIA Tegra-based tablet (with 2000 mAh battery and 400 mW display)
Use Case
Stand by (Display & Radio off) 128 Kbps Music Playback HD Video Playback on local LCD

Battery Life Estimates

2000 Hours 140 Hours 8 Hours

HD Video Playback on external LCD(via HDMI)

16 Hours

Advantages:

Lower power consumption , Higher performance per watt Faster Web page load times

Higher Performance for demanding applications

Faster Multitasking Higher Quality Gaming

Conclusion:
Smartphones and tablets are increasingly being used as personal computing
devices.

Todays smartphonesare no longer being used for just phone calls, messaging, and
light Web browsing.Mobile applications for PC-class use cases such as photo editing, word processing,multi-tabbed Web browsing, modern graphics-rich gaming, and multi-tasking arenow availablefor mobile devices and are pushing the performance requirements of these devices. The quad core CPUs in NVIDIA Tegra 4 family of mobile SoCsinclude several key enhancements thatdeliverhigher performance for thenext generation of mobile applications.
