DRAMA IN LANGUAGE TEACHING

Teachers nowadays advocate some elements of a Communicative Approach and therefore recognise and appreciate the value of Drama in language teaching. Drama is a powerful language teaching tool that involves all of the students interactively.

Use of Drama

1- It integrates language skills in a natural way. Careful listening is a key feature. Spontaneous verbal expression is integral to most of the activities. 2- It integrates verbal and non verbal aspects of communication, thus bringing together both mind and body.

3- It fosters self-awareness (and awareness of others), self-esteem and confidence; and through this, motivation is developed. 4-Drama is an active approach to learning where participants identify with roles and situations to be able to engage with, explore and understand the world they live in.

Advantages of Using Drama in Language Teaching

Confidence, motivation, trust and participation Oral and written communication skills Awareness of interpersonal and sociocultural communication skills Accuracy and fluency of expression Rhythm and pronunciation Linguistic intelligence Social interactive skills

How can Dramatic Activities be used in Language Teaching

Mime A non-verbal representation of an idea or story through gesture, bodily movement and expression. Mime can help to fix language in the minds of the students

Role-play

Role-play normally involves students playing imaginary people in an imaginary situation.

Creating one's own script

An English language class could, of course, write its own script.

Improvisation without a script

Improvisation is really a play without a script. Due to this lack of script, there is no dependency upon reading or memory skills, and different levels of language students should be able to take part in it and enjoy it.

Songs and Games

Games are popular for the foreign language teaching especially for the first two years. Children in this age enjoy playing games and in the main point they should recognize that language works.
