A Brief Overview

EDGE (Enhanced Data rates for GSM Evolution) is a faster version of GSM It is a high-speed 3G technology built upon the GSM standard Allows multimedia applications (e.g., streaming audio & video to cell phones at speeds up to 384 Kbps) First launched in the U.S. in 2003 by Cingular, which is now AT&T

8-PSK Modulation
- Why EDGE uses 8-PSK: Can work within the existing GSM channel structure & BW Provides a higher data capability than the GMSK modulation 8PSK Modulation Constellation

- Rate which symbols are sent remains the same as in GMSK (However each symbol now represents three bits instead of one)
System detects the # of bit errors and adjusts the coding scheme accordingly

EDGE Technology
Edge Disadvantages
1. EDGE cell sites must be modified to accept transmissions of this type (coverage can be patchy in certain areas) Higher power consumption during data transmission causes battery to drain fast (e.g., access the Internet with your phone as modem -> within 2 to 4 hours the battery will be drained) As power consumption is increased, cell motherboard circuit temperature rises and the phone feels hot.
