What is EDGE Cellular Technology?

Key Elements - EDGE

EDGE is an upgrade to existing GSM/GPRS networks, and can be applied as a software update to those networks.
EDGE provides capability for IP based data transfer. 8-PSK Modulation
- Why EDGE uses 8-PSK: Can work within the existing GSM channel structure & BW Provides a higher data capability than the GMSK modulation 8PSK Modulation Constellation

- Rate which symbols are sent remains the same as in GMSK (However each symbol now represents three bits instead of one)

- Actual data rate is increased by a factor of 3

EDGE network is very similar to the basic GSM network structure PCU decides if data is to be routed to the packet switched or circuit switched networks EDGE has 9 different Modulation and Coding Schemes (MCS) Allows different degrees of error protection and coding rate

Edge Disadvantages
1. EDGE cell sites must be modified to accept transmissions of this type (coverage can be patchy in certain areas) Higher power consumption during data transmission causes battery to drain fast (e.g., access the Internet with your phone as modem -> within 2 to 4 hours the battery will be drained) As power consumption is increased, cell motherboard circuit temperature rises and the phone feels hot.
