ETHNOGEOGRAPHY

The twitter discovery

I decided to carry out my ethnogeography project on twitter. I did so by scanning through the recent images of 10 people (5 males and 5 females). After looking through their recent images I favourited a total of 6 selfies per person, some selfies dating as far back as 2012.

The response I got was very mixed. Out of all the females only 1 female direct messaged me whilst the other females responded by favouriting some of my pictures.

The males on the other handed responded quite differently. All of the males direct messaged me and all of the males decided to favourite some of my pictures in response.

This showed that the intentions of males and females are were different. The female I spoke to only directed messaged to create conversation and become friends whereas the conversation with the males was flirtier and 4 out of 5 of the males attempted to get my number.

AFTER MY FINDINGS I DECIDED TO CARRY OUT A SURVEY ON PEOPLES ATTITUDES TOWARDS TWITTER. I INTERVIEWED 20 PEOPLE (10 MALES AND 10 FEMALES) AGED 18-25.

THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS WERE ASKED:

Question1 : What do you mainly use twitter for? A- To socialise and talk to friends Almost all the females selected A and B saying that twitter was a good way of venting when theyre annoyed. They said they found it an effective way of expressing their feelings. All of the males selected A and D saying that they tend to follow footballers and their favourite musicians

B- To vent and share your opinions

C- To network with likeminded people D- To keep up to date with favourite celebrities

Question 2: How often do you use twitter? A- Daily

Out of all the people interviewed only one female said she used twitter daily everyone else said they used twitter 2-4 times a week.

B- Once a week
C- 2-4 times a week D- Other

The female that said she used it daily explained that she was an addict and tweeted every aspect of her life

Question 3: When someone favourites your content what do you think? The response to this question was very mixed but the general consensus was that their reaction is dependant on the content.

E.g if someone was to favourite a tweet then theyd assume that the person agreed with what was said, whereas if someone was to favourite a picture then theyd assume that the person found them attractive.

Carrying out this ethnogeography project allowed me to get a deeper insight into peoples attitudes towards social networking. The comparison in attitudes between females and males was something I found very interesting. When a female interacts with a male i.e favouriting pictures of him the male sees it as subtle flirting and proceeds to engage in conversation with the female, whereas if female favourites another females picture they dont really think anything of it.
