Balagtasan first held in Instituto de Mujerres in Tondo, Manila. It is a debate in poetic verse patterned after the duplo of the nineteenth century, which was conceived as a tribute to Balagtas. The first balagtasan was held on 6 April 1924. Three sets of poets participated using scripted defenses. The debate between Jos Corazn de Jess and Florentino Collantes was particularly impressive and the organizers decided to set up another balagtasan for the two distinguished poets, this time requiring improvised defenses. This was held on 18 October 1925, at the Olympic Stadium in Manila. De Jesus won the title of the first Hari ng Balagtasan (King of Balagtasan).
Komedya Komedya is colorful theatrical tradition in the Philippines that describes the conflicts between the Muslims and the Christians. It was used by the Spanish as a method to spread Christianity in the country. 2 Types of Komedya: 1. Secular Komedya is performed at the local fiestas. ex. Moro-Moro 2. Religious Komedya is also called Komedya de Santo centers on the life of Christ or of any saint. It usually seen during church celebrations. The actors move in a stylized way, have extravagant costumes and elaborately choreographed war scenes. ex. Sinakulo; Siete Palabras
Awit at korido (Metrical Romance) - are long verse narratives on chivalric-heroic, religious, legendary and folkloric themes.

playwright, dramatist, short story writer, novelist, journalist,violinist, and painter. Mariano was a Katipunan member. Some of his works: Novels - Juan Masili: Ang Pinuno ng Tulisan(1906), Ang mga Anak Dalita (1911), Ang Tala sa Panghulo (1913)

a distinction given to him for his Nena at Neneng, acclaimed as the first novel ever Published in the vernacular in 1905. He was also the writer behind Kasaysayan ng Mag-inang Mahirap, Mga
the 20th century. He is attributed as "Father of Realism" because of his realistic subjects. He wrote the trilogy Bulaklak ng Kalumpang, Wakas ng Pagtitiis and Hinagpis at Ligaya, which became landmarks of Tagalog novels (Nobelang Tagalog) during the American period.
Among his awarded works were the 1964 poem Tilamsik (literally splash [of water]
or spark [of fire]), the 1941 compilation entitled Damdamin (feelings, emotion). Damdamin won the first prize during the first poetry competition during the time of the Commonwealth of the Philippines in 1941. He wrote more than 26 novels. His works belonged in "The Golden Age of the Tagalog Novel". Among his well-known works was Prinsesa Urduja (Princess Urduja), a play that was presented in the Cultural Center of the Philippines.
