INTRODUCTION

• The modern computers can exist in the environments that are very
harsh and noisy which can lead to potential problems due to
electromagnetic interference (EMI). EMI consists of any unwanted,
spurious, conducted or radiated signals of electrical origin that can
cause degradation in equipment performance. Because of these
problems, all components must comply with specifications to ensure
electromagnetic compatibility (EMC), and there are numerous design
methods that can be used to prevent EMI.

• INTRODUCTION-The cause of an EMI problem may be either within

the system one is dealing with, in which case the problem is labeled an
intersystem problem. Or the EMI may come from the outside, in which case
the problem is given in the intersystem designation.

EMI can propagate by two means:

Radiation ‑ where the energy can be coupled either through magnetic
or electric field, or as an electro‑magnetic wave between the source and the
victim,
Conduction ‑ where the EMI energy will propagate along power supply lines
and data cables

Electric transmission

• Electrical transmission paths constitute a primary means by which

the EMC characteristics of equipment are classified. Transmission
paths are both conducted and radiated. "Conducted" means carried
by metallic paths, including lumped components such as capacitors
and transformers. "Radiated" is the term used to characterize non
metallic paths, even though the transfer mechanism may be the
"near field" or induction, rather than radiation, field of an antenna.

EMI RECEPTOR
NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY

Any EMI situation requires not only an emission source but also a receptor, A
receptor is also called a "victim" source because it consists of any device, when
exposed to conducted or radiated electromagnetic energy from emitting
sources, will degrade or malfunction in performance. Many devices can be
emission sources and receptors simultaneously.

Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) encompasses both the emissions and

the immunity (or susceptibility) portion of EMI. The proliferation of
sensitive electronic equipment within the commercial environment made
EMC the new concern.

Some examples of EMC related problems:

• Your computer interfaces with FM radio reception

• Operating your vacuum cleaner causes "snow" on your TV

• Your car radio buzzes when you drive under a power line

• A helicopter goers out of control when it flies too close to radio tower

CONCLUSION

EMC is a very important issue that embedded

systems designers have to deal with. Even though it
is very difficult topic, there may be practical design
techniques that can be used to design for EMC and
EMI
