Integrated Service Digital Network

ISDN Introduction
National Institute of Science & Technology

• Stands for Integrated Services Digital

Network allows voice and data using end-
to-end digital connectivity .
• Basic component is channel,it supports
3types of channels(B,D,H).
• Kilo means 1000 not 1024.

ISDN Services
National Institute of Science & Technology

• BRI and PRI services.

• The ISDN Basic Rate Interface (BRI)
service offers two B channels and one D
channel , bit rate 192 kbps.
• ISDN Primary Rate Interface (PRI)
service offers 23 B channels and 1 D
channel, bit rate in America 1.544 Mbps
in Europe 2.048 Mbps

ISDN Advantages
National Institute of Science & Technology

• Increased productivity and accessibility

• Two phone numbers on a single line
• Speed
• Multiple Devices
• Signaling

Integrated Service Digital Network

ISDN Evolution
National Institute of Science & Technology

• First the network was all-analogue and voice-centric

• Digital transmission (PDH) in the core network
• Digital switching at 64 obit/s
• SS7 replaces channel associated signaling systems
• SDH replaces PDH
• ISDN offers digital technology to end users
• DSL (primarily ADSL) technology takes over

ISDN Protocol Structure

National Institute of Science & Technology

• Protocol discriminator - The protocol used to encode the

remainder of the Layer.
• Length of call reference value - Defines the length of the next field.
• Flag - Set to zero for messages sent by the party that allocated the
call reference value; otherwise set to one.
• Call reference value - An arbitrary value that is allocated for the
duration of the specific session, which identifies the call between
the device maintaining the call and the ISDN switch.
• Message type - Defines the primary purpose of the frame.

Conclusion
National Institute of Science & Technology

• ISDN is replacing our old analog phones and

offers a lot of new services.
• Easy way to transmit voice and data
simultaneously at the same time using
advantages of a digital communication.
• Due to its easy accessibility it is widely
used.
