The Importance of Primary


Education in Schools

According to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, over 1 in
5 (23%) children aged 5-14 were overweight or obese in 2007-08.
According to World Health Organisation, globally, in 2010 the
number of overweight children under the age of five, is estimated
to be over 42 million.
About 1 in 25 (3.8%) students aged 1214 were smokers, according to
the 2008 Australian Secondary School Students Alcohol and Drugs
Survey.
According to World Health Organisation, children and youth aged 5
17 should accumulate at least 60 minutes of moderate- to vigorous-
intensity physical activity daily.
Obesity and insufficient physical activity is increasing at an alarming
rate, which may develop non-communicable diseases like diabetes
and cardiovascular diseases at a younger age.
Statistics to keep in mind
These statistics highlight the importance and necessity of
PDHPE education in order to prevent obesity and diseases
and increase physical activity and a healthy diet within
children.
Consequently, children at a young age must gain an
understanding and awareness of personal development,
health and physical education in schools.
Within schools, PDHPE teaches health priorities, in relation
to drug education, fitness and physical activity, child
protection and nutrition.

on the personal development and health of your child.
It improves your childs wellbeing and physical, social,
mental and spiritual health.
PDHPE provides the knowledge and strategies when
experiencing bullying, racism, family and peer
problems/pressure.

attitudes and skills that enables one to lead healthy, active
and enjoyable lives.

learning!
PDHPE education is an important part of your childs life.
It teaches skills such as moving, problem-solving,
communicating, interacting and decision-making.
PDHPE focuses on factors of growth and development,
games and sport, gymnastics, dance, active lifestyle,
personal health choices, safe living and interpersonal
relationships.
In which, these skills and strands increase awareness and
responsibility, emphasise informed decision making/action
and encourages an understanding and valuing of self and
to others.

The role of PDHPE!
It is essential to have combined support of the school,
teachers and parents to achieve the best for your child.
Teachers will gain an insight of different perspectives and
decisions to be effectively implemented in
teaching/learning.
Parents will also utilize this by working to actively support
their childs learning outside the school environment.
Through working together in a diverse, supportive
environment, it is more likely for your child to develop
positive behaviours and attitudes towards a healthy and
safe living.
