The “iPhone” effect 01 million sold in one 01 million sold in two ?
week (05/07) months (09/07)

• The advent of laptops and high-end handsets into

mobile networks is a key driver of traffic growth
– Content and applications not supported by the
previous generation of mobile devices
• A single laptop can generate as much traffic as 450
basic-feature phones 19$ 499-599$ 20-600$

• A high-end handset such as an iPhone or Blackberry •

Mobile Backhaul and NGAN
• Mobile backhauling represents the major cost component of the RAN (Radio Access Network)
• The creation of a future proof mobile backhaul plays a key role in the development of technologies HSPA and in the
future of ultra mobile broadband LTE (Long Term Evolution)
• Mobile backhaul upgrade can take advantage of fiber optical infrastructure of the emerging NGAN, with possible
connections to all the protocol levels: fiber transmission, Ethernet and IP
• The adoption of IP/Ethernet as transport technology for the mobile backhaul allows better bandwidth scalability and
important cost reduction vs traditional solution (ATM, SDH…)

Analog-digital TV transition and its
• In every service area (e.g.: Rome):
“dividends”
– Analogue TV: 1 frequency  1 program
– Digital TV tech.: 1 frequency  6 programs (or 2 in HD)
• From transition, expected results are:
– Increase of television programs numbers
TV ecosystem internal
– Increase of reception quality (High Definition)
dividend
– New "broadcasters" entrance in the market
External dividend for
• Release of large segments of TV spectrum Telecommunications
– Best frequencies for broadband in mobility

3G/HSPA Femtocells
What?
3G/HSPA • The broadband access lines used for
Macro the Femtocells backhauling, enable a
network strong capacity increase (per surface
unit) of the mobile network
• It is possible to assign a “dedicated
cell” to each user
- Femtocells 3G/HSPA
Why?
• Low investments in Opex and Capex for
backhauling
• Improved efficiency in the bandwidth
DSL & FTTx use
Access Network • Lower client attainment costs
Internet • Churn reduction
Femtocell
• Integration with fixed-network services
(like HDTV)

Using Femtocells – Technology issues
• Interference • Standardization
– Deployments will use the same – Today is difficult to grant interoperability
frequencies for both the femtocell and the between femtocells from different operators
macro networks
– Proximity of femtocell base stations in
multi-dwelling units generates femto-to-
femto interference
• Handover between femtocell and
macrocell owned by the same Telco in the
indoor/outdoor transitions
• Complexity of management
– Need to manage a large number of
femtocells (millions?) – Need of a “Femtocell Gateway” able to
permit the interoperability between
femtocells from different vendor
© M. Dècina Convegno Between, Capri, 9 Ottobre 2009 14
Using Femtocells – Regulatory issues
• Public or private usage?
• Private usage cell needs SIMs authentication. Is it legal to use the licensed spectrum for such as
usage?
• Public usage cell can be accessed as Macrocells. Can Mobile Telco use the fixed broadband
access subscribed by the user?
• Femto data transport across DSL/NGAN owned by a different Telco operator
– Bitstreaming the femto Service-VLAN?
