October 6 & 7 Notes

GOOD MORNING! TODAYS
WRITING PROMPT IS:
Choice 1: Who is your favorite musical artist and why? Give
me specific reasons, songs, and characteristics. Persuade me
to give him/her/them a listen!
Choice 2: Describe your future robot servant: Imagine a
future in which we each have a personalized robot. What
would yours be like? What would it do? What would it look
like? What would it talk like? What features would it have?

You have 30 minutes to write at least 3 paragraphs (3-5 sentences
per paragraph). More paragraphs is fine! Remember to edit your
paper when you are done.
THE FOUR BASICS OF GOOD
WRITING
1. It considers what the audience knows and
needs.
2. It fulfills the writers purpose.
3. It includes a clear, definite point.
4. It provides support that shows, explains, or
proves the main point.
THE CRITICAL READING PROCESS:
2PR
Preview the reading. Establish a guiding question.
Read the piece, locating the thesis, support, and
transitions, and considering the quality of the support.
Pause to think during reading. Take notes and ask
questions about what your are reading. Talk to the
author.
Review the reading, your guiding questions, your
marginal notes, and questions.
READING AND WRITING
CRITICALLY
Summarize: When you are reading, consider the authors purpose,
main point, and the evidence given in support of the main point.
Analyze: Consider whether the support is logical or if it leaves you with
questions; what assumptions the author might b e making about the
subject or reader; and what assumptions you as the reader may be
making.
Synthesize: Consider how the reading relates and connects to your
own experience and knowledge, and what new ideas it has given you.
Evaluate: Consider whether the author seems biased, whether you are
reading with a biased point of view, and whether or not the piece
achieves the authors intended purpose.
