WHY UPLANDS ?

• Intensive agriculture area is limited to jhola (low) lands

• Perennial flow of water restricts them to monoculture

of rice

• Invites good scope of agriculture area expansion

• Major source of soil loss and runoff

RC-Koraput IRC-2008
PROBLEMS OF UPLANDS

• Undulating topography

• Poor selection of crops & faulty mgt.

practices

• Erratic rainfall of the region

• Lack of information regarding choice of

crops and SWC practices

RC-Koraput IRC-2008
TREATMENTS

• Main plots-----slope-2 & 5%

• Sub plots------crop combinations

• Ragi+GN------4:6, 4:8, 6:8, 8:10

• Upland rice+ BG-4:6, 4:8, 6:8, 8:10

• Pure crops as control

• Design ------split plot

• Total treatment combinations----60

ASSUMPTION(S)

GOAL Productivity enhancement of Yield & resource 1. Choice of crops Productivity of uplands
uplands conservation can be improved with
parameters suitable SWC & mgt.
2. Nutrient mgt. practices
Practices

PURPOSE 1. Assessment of cover location & slope ( 21. biophysical , yield data 1. Cover crops
crops &4%) performs better
2. Runoff and soil loss specific crops than routine crops
2. Soil loss, runoff data
estimation under collection 2. Cover crop and
different cover crops nutrient mgt.
reduces runoff &
soil loss

OUTPUT 1. Improvement in 1. Production 1. Yield Ha-1 1. Cover crops yield

RC-Koraput IRC-2008
OBJECTIVES

1. To access the biophysical performance and yield

of different strip crop combinations on varying
slopes of uplands

2. To determine optimum width of strip for resource

conservation on different slopes

3. To estimate run off & soil losses under different

strip crop combinations on varying slopes

4. To estimate the impact of strip crop on soil

nutrient losses and soil health

RC-Koraput IRC-2008
OBSERVATIONS

• Biophysical measures, yield attributes and yield of

crops

• Soil loss, runoff and nutrient loss estimation

• Soil fertility status OC,NPK, EC, Ph, microbial

activity

• Soil physical parameters-aggregate determination,

water holding capacity, infiltration capacity
