Social entrepreneurship is the activity of
establishing new business ventures to achieve
social change.

Social enterprises are not charities or welfare
agencies.

They are private businesses established by
entrepreneurs with an emphasis on human
values rather than just profit.
Three core elements:
Created to provide benefits for a community
Creates opportunities so people can help themselves as
well as others
Utilises sound commercial business practices to ensure its
sustainability i.e. the business will naturally uphold and
encourage environmental sustainability as well as ethical
considerations
To create and maintain a stable level
of employment.
Create jobs and provide support to
socially vulnerable groups.
Social Entrepreneurship promotes
development of entrepreneurial skills.
Social entrepreneurs find opportunity in most economic
sectors. The growth areas for social enterprises are
identified as:
Environmental
Housing
Health and care
Information services
Public services
Financial services
Training and business development
Manufacturing
Food and agriculture

Commercial Entrepreneurship
represents the identification,
evolution, and exploitation of
opportunities that result in Profit.
Social Entrepreneurship refers to
the identification, evolution, and
exploitation of opportunity that result
in social value.
Commercial Entrepreneur may
create change in the society, but
that is not the primary purpose
of starting the venture.
Social Entrepreneur may
generate profit, but for him/her
that is not the primary reason for
starting the venture.
Difference between Social & Business
Entrepreneurship
Another key difference between the
Social and the Commercial Entrepreneur
is in the meaning of wealth creation.
For the Commercial Entrepreneur,
wealth is same as profit.
For the Social Entrepreneur, however,
wealth also encompasses creation of the
social and environmental capital.
