SOCIAL INTERACTION

refers to the ways in which people respond to one
another. the process by which people act toward or
respond to other people
Social structure
refers to the way in which a society is organized into
predictable relationships. framework of societal
institutions and social practices that make up a society
and organize and limit people's behavior.

Types of Social Interaction
Cooperation
Conflict
Competition
Negotiation
Coercion

Cooperation
This refers to collaborative efforts between people to
achieve a common goal.

Conflict
Is significant in social life. It involves direct struggle
between individuals or groups over commonly valued
resources or goals.



Competition
It is a form of conflict in which there is agreement on the
means that can be used to pursue an end.
Negotiation
In the process of negatiation, two or more competing
parties reach a mutually satisfactory agreement.
However, when negotiations fails, conflict or coercion
sometimes occurs.

Coercion
appears to be one-side, one imposing an action or
behavior on another. There is relationship between the
coercer and the coerced.

Statuses

In sociology status refers particularly to a position in
social structure; any position that determines where a
person "fits" within the society.
The most important component of social interaction
(according to Macionis)
Types of statuses:
Ascribes status
Statuses assigned to people without effort on their part.
Achieved status
refers to a social position that is assumed voluntarily
and that reflects a significant measure of personal ability
and efforts.

Social roles
Second major component of social structure.
It refers to patterns of expected behavior attached to a
particular status.

ROLE STRAIN
The problems of individuals in meeting or fulfilling their
roles
ROLE CONFLICT
One common source of role strain
Occurs when the carrying out of one role automatically
results in the violation of another.
ROLE EXIT
The process by which people disengage from social roles
that have been central to their lives.

Group
refers to any number of people with similar norms,
values, and expectations who regularly and consciously
interact
