SHANTINIKETAN - founded
by Rabindranath Tagore in 1902.

He disliked English dress ,
language and culture and
considered it to be-
Contrary to Indian traditions
Lacking-quality of educating
soul
Lacking-spiritual relation-
teacher and taught

Tagore wanted an ideal educational
centre where there can be-
Proper atmosphere , as well as
Education in accordance with
Indian traditions.

Thereafter, he came up with
SHANTINIKETAN

History-
Devendranath Tagore-F/O Rabindranath Tagore
established an Ashram at Bolepur,- 100 miles away
from Calcutta.
Spent his time in prayer and worship here
Found himself in peace and named it as Shanti
Niketan meaning an abode of peace
Rabindranath came across-sorrows, education and
other affairs of people there
He wanted- villagers upliftment and welfare
He opened an independent school-free from govt.-in
1902
Rules here were based on his own ideas . (contd..)

Dresses, teacher and the taught, etc. aimed-
acquiring knowledge
Subjects-as per taste and aptitude of the students
Expenses- as the students increased-expenses
were met from tagores personal earning (royalties ,
money from awards, etc.)
It was granted full university status in May 1951
by the government of independent India and
Rathindranath Tagore, became the first upacharya
(vice chancellor) of this university.
