Roller Compacted

Concrete (RCC)

Roller compacted concrete (RCC) or lean-rolled
concrete, is a dry (no-slump) concrete which has
been consolidated by vibrating rollers.

applications are in the construction of dams,
single layer paving for highways and runways,
and multiple layer placements for foundations.

Mix design
A number of mixture proportioning methods
have been successfully used throughout the
world for RCC therefore, it is difficult to
identify one procedure as the standard
procedure.
the most common mixture proportioning
methods are variations of the following two
general approaches
1. Concrete Consistency or workability
method
2. Soil Compaction method
Concrete Consistency Method

The concrete consistency method normally
requires the establishment of specific
mixture parameters such as the amount of
aggregates, the amount of water, or the
amount of cementitious materials. One of
these parameters is then adjusted in order
to meet a required level of consistency,
often measured using an apparatus called
a Vebe consistometer.
Soil Compaction Method

The soil compaction method is the most
widely used mixture proportioning method.
This proportioning method involves
establishing a relationship between the
density and moisture content of an RCC
mixture to obtain the maximum density by
compacting samples over a range of
moisture contents.
Sequence of placement

For effective consolidation, roller compacted
concrete must be dry enough to support the mass
of the vibrating equipment

wet enough to allow the cement paste to be
evenly distributed throughout the mass during the
mixing and consolidation processes.
To ensure adequate bonding of the roller
compacted concrete to hardened concrete at the
cold joints, segregation must be prevented and a
high plasticity bedding mix must be used at the start
of placement.

Roller compacted concrete can also be used for
continuous placements without cold joints.
To minimize the heat of hydration in massive
concrete placements, and therefore to minimize
cracking, the cement content should be low

The largest possible size of aggregate (3in) which
will not cause segregation should be used.
The use of pozzolans is often more economical
than of cement alone, besides having the
advantage of a lower heat of hydration.

High fly ash (PFA) contents of 60 to 80 per cent
of the volume of cementitious material have
been used successfully for the construction of
dams.
