Public smoking is a way to spread carcinogen among people around you and the environment. One of the adverse effect of public smoking is production of second hand smoke.
INTRODUCTION Second hand smokers are those individuals who unwillingly are affected by smoke released from burning cigarette. Second hand smoke is of two types: 1. Side stream 2. Main stream Side stream is a smoke released from burning end of cigarette. Main stream is a smoke exhaled by the smoker. Both type of smoke contains tobacco smoke ,burning paper residues and chemical used for treating tobacco leaves.
Why to stop.. Smoking can cause serious health problems to the smokers themselves and to those inhaling secondhand smoke. Studies show that exposure to cigarette smoke for as little as thirty minutes a day can raise a non-smoker's risk of suffering a fatal heart attack or coronary problem for person who is obese, diabetic and high-blood pressure. Smoke contains nicotine which is addictive in nature as it provide relaxation and sense of pleasure former but later act as a silent killer. It is well said smoking is optional while breathing is not. Being forced to breathe tobacco smoke is annoying and irritating to most people, especially people who have chronic conditions like asthma and bronchitis. Public smoking causes fatal disease like lung cancer, cardiovascular disease, asthma etc. It has negative impact on children and teenagers. Discarded cigarette butts can be a big problem. Cigarette butts constitute the overwhelming majority of litter in many public places such as parks, beaches, sidewalks. EFFECT ON ENVIRONMENT It acts as a major air pollutant as it has various chemical constituents containing toxins. It has a massive impact on the environment by: a) polluting the air b) destroying forests c) starting bushfires d) killing marine creatures
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has classified second hand smoke as a group A carcinogen, a substance known to cause cancers for which there is no safe level of exposures. Quality of air is deteriorating as RSP (respirable suspended particles) get increasing.
SMOKE-FREE LAWS smoke-free laws are public policies, including criminal laws and occupational safety and health regulations, which prohibit tobacco smoking in workplaces and other public spaces. Laws implementing bans on indoor smoking have been introduced by many countries in various forms over the years, with some legislators like UK,USA Concept of smoke-free housing has been launched by US Department of Housing and Urban Development to promote non-smokers Smoking in public places was prohibited in India from 2 October 2008 under the Prohibition of Smoking in Public Places Rules, 2008 and COTPA. ADVANTAGES Such laws may reduce health care cost, improve work productivity, and lower the overall cost of labor in the community thus protected, making that workforce more attractive for employers. They are seen as an important element of policy to support behavior change in favor of a healthy lifestyle. FACTS ON SECOND HAND SMOKE An estimated 46,000 death from heart disease in people who are currently non-smokers. About 3,400 lung cancer death as a result of breathing second hand smoke. Other breathing problem in non-smokers include cough, mucus, chest-discomfort. 50,000 to 300,000 lung infection in children younger than 18 months of age, which results in 7500 to 15,000 hospitalization annually. More than 750,000 middle ear infections in children. Pregnant women exposed to second hand smoke are at increased risk of having low birth-weighted babies. Tobacco smoke contains over 4000 chemical compounds. More than 60 of these are known or expected to cause cancer. No law or prohibition can actually eradicate this problem, it can be solved only by our resolution . We have no right to take life of others so stop smoking at public places if you cant give up your urge to smoke.
