SOLAR ENERGY
AND
SOLAR TREE
ABSTRACT
Now a days with the growing population and energy
demand we should take a renewable option of energy
source and also we should keep in mind that energy
should not cause pollution and other natural hazards. In
this case the solar energy is the best option for us.
India is a highly populated country , so we should take
the advantage of such an energy which requires a very
less space to produce energy efficiently . In this case
solar tree could be the best one for us . We can also use
the technique called SPIRALLING PHYLLATAXY
to improve the efficiency of the plant . It can be applied
in street lightening system , industrial power supply
etc. It is much better than the traditional solar PV
system in area point of view and also more efficient .
So this will be a very good option and should be
implemented

FI RST LET US KNOW ABOUT SOLAR ENERGY
SOLAR ENERGY
Solar energy is the energy obtained from the suns light
rays .
It the most abundant energy sources that is present.
It also highly used because it does not cause pollution
and obtained in the purest form.
It is the cheapest form of energy

Solar Energy A Bright Idea!
Id put my money on the sun and solar energy. What
a source of power! I hope we dont have to wait til
oil and coal run out before we tackle that.
- Thomas Edison
Two Main Categories:
Solar Thermal Solar Photovoltaic (PV)
Water heating and cooking Electricity production
Solar Thermal Energy
Cooking Water Heating
Solar Electric Systems
Photovoltaic (PV) systems convert
light energy directly into electricity.
Commonly known as solar cells.
The simplest systems power the small
calculators we use every day. More
complicated systems will provide a
large portion of the electricity in the
near future.
PV represents one of the most promising
means of maintaining our energy
intensive standard of living while not
contributing to global warming and
pollution.
INTRODUCTION TO SOLAR TREE
Solar Tree
Designed by Ross Lovegrove

The Solar Tree is a combination of artistic and technological
effort which exists as a form of solar artwork. Within the past
several years, artistically inclined inventors have strived to
envision new methods to gain utility from solar cell technology.
This relatively new concept was conceived in an attempt to
merge new technology, relating to the absorption and use of
solar power, and artistic aesthetic. The inspiration for their
organic design has both visually pleasing and pragmatic
purposes. Though the instrumental value of the Solar Tree may
differ depending on its interpretation, the general form of an
organic, tree-like figure utilizing solar panels remains consistent
CONSTRUCTION AND WORKING

The solar tree consists of some important parts in its design.
They are as follows
Solar panels
Long tower
LDEs
Batteries
Stems for connecting the panels
WORKING:
Batteries are charged during the day time.
LEDs are automatically switched on
These are used to indicate how much charge/energy remain
left
Batteries are also used to store the energy so that we can use
it at night and in cloudy days when no sunlight is there.

TECHNICAL INFO
The electrical connection/control box is housed in plastic at the foot of
the base, and consists in:
2 12V240Ah batteries
cable junction box for the 10 solar panels
cable junction box for the 10 LED heads and 4 LED lamps
electronic controls for battery charger
electronic feed for connecting to public lighting grid
electronic controls for LED heads and lamps.

How it works

The Solar Tree panels charge batteries during the day. At dusk the
Solar Tree automatically switches on its LEDs. The internal
control can also regulate the amount of light produced depending
on how much charge is left in the batteries. Artemide claims the
Solar Tree will produce light for three consecutive overcast
days. The designer Ross Lovegrove claims, "Solar Tree
represents the DNA of our time and it also shows it is possible to
create beautiful things using the most advanced technology."In
2007 Lovegrove was awarded the Vogue Traveller Ecology Prize
for his work with the Solar Tree
SPI RALLI NG PHYLLATAXY
It is a technique used in designing of
solar tree . it provides the way to
help the lower panels from the
shadow of upper ones, so that it can
track maximum power from sun
Conception

Ross Lovegrove, a Welsh industrial designer renowned for his organic
inspired designs, originally conceived of the concept. It was first
manufactured by Artemide, a design based Italian manufacturer based in
Milan. In an effort to follow a more environmentally conscious route, the
company sought to incorporate solar power in their architectural designs.
[1]

Artemide defines the Solar Tree as The successful marriage of the most
advanced technology and the aesthetic requirements of the urban
environment by way of renewable energy.
[2]

Ross Lovegroves original design consisted of a sinuous tree constructed of
steel pipes, measuring 5.5 meters, supporting a light bubble in which 38
solar cells are connected to a hidden 12V battery system which lights an
assortment of 1W LEDs at the tip. The solar cells for the project were
commissioned by Sharp Solar, who Artemide considers the leading
manufacturer of solar cells. The peak power of each solar panel can reach
38 watts.

FUNCTIONING

Solar Tree is designed to function both autonomously and in synchronisation
with the public grid.
When wired for autonomous functioning (not connected to the public
electric grid), it uses the energy generated by the solar panels during
the day to recharge the batteries. At dusk, which is recognised by
automatically monitoring the solar panel output, the LED sources are
activated and remain lit until dawn (or as long as the batteries remain
charged). Solar Tree is capable of functioning for three consecutive
days of cloudy or overcast weather.
When wired for coordinated functioning with the public lighting grid,
it uses the energy generated by the solar panels to recharge the
batteries and activate/deactivate the LED sources in synchrony with the
grid, to which eventual surpluses of stored current can be relinquished.
In the event of low reserves of current in the accumulators, Solar Tree
automatically reduces its luminous output.
ADVANTAGES
No air pollution
We wouldnt have to worry as much about
future energy sources
People in poor country would have access to
electricity
People can save money
Land requirement is very less

APPLICATION
Street light
House supply
Industrial power supply
