Meeting One and Two

Indicators
Identify the differences between the structure
of roots and stems
Explaining the function of roots and stems
Differentiate between xylem and phloem

Apperception
Do you still remember about growth and
development? Why their can be happen?
THEY CAN BE HAPPEN CAUSED BY INCREASING
NUMBER AND SIZE OF CELL
Is the root and stem having many cells?
What is the name of group of cells that have same
shape and function?
TISSUE
Lets see the figure below
There are three
main part of
plant that is
ROOT, STEM,
AND LEAF
When you abstracting a root of plant, you will
see things like figure below
Lets indentifying
its main parts
a. Main root
b. Lateral roots
c. Root hairs
When we make a cross-section of root (left) and
stem (right) we will found some parts as figure
below
Identifying the same parts between
root and stem
1. THE EPIDERMIS is the outer part of plant organ. Its function is
to protect the inner part of the plant. Root hair, stomata, and
gland can found in this tissue
2. THE CORTEX is a filler of space between epidermis and vascular
tissue. An example of this tissue is the parenchyma. Parenchym
cells have a thin wall. Inside the parenchyma cells you can find
plastids such as chloroplast and starch. Other examples of cortex
tissue are collenchym and schlerenchym. Both of these tissues
have a thick wall. The schlerenchym has a wall usually
strengthened by lignin. The collenchym has a function of
supporting the young plant and the schlerenchym has a function
of supporting the old plant. The cortex as known as a simple
tissue that has a population of cells with the same structure and
function.
3. THE VASCULAR TISSUE fill the inside part of the
plant organ. In the inner part of the vascular tissue,
you can still find the parenchym called pith. You can
find two tissues in the vascular tissue named the xylem
and phloem.
The position of the phloem is on the outer side of the
xylem
a. The function of xylem is transport water in plant
b. The function of the phloem is to transport food in
the plant

Now. Imagine if a plant doesnt has a root. What
will happen with that plant ?
Lets discuss it in your group to find
out the answer as the function of
plant root
The functions of plant root are
To make the plant can stand upright
To absorb water, minerals (nutrient and organic
compound) from soil.
To help the respiration process in plant
In some certain plant, root also has the function
as the place to store nutrient reserve. Its
examples is cassava.
Then, Imagine if a plant doesnt has a
stem. What will happen with that plant ?
Lets discuss it in your group to find
out the answer as the function of
plant stem
The functions of plant stem are
To support the upper parts of the plant such as
leafs, flowers, and fruits.
To transports water and mineral from root to leaf.
It also transport food, as the result of the
photosynthesis in the leaf to other parts of plant.
In some certain plant, stem also has the function
as the place to store nutrient reserve. Its examples
are sago and carrot.
Reflection
Can you identify the differences between the
structure of stems and roots?
Can you identify the differences between the
function of stems and roots?
Can you differentiating between xylem and
phloem?
Can you explaining the function of root and
stem?

Homework
Write down the function of:
1. root (four functions)
Write down the functions of Root.
2. stem (three functions)
3. leaf (two functions)
