By Allison Perez CURRENTLY Traditional urinals are used such as these (I think) in schools Traditional urinals: Use unnecessary amounts of water Can get messy Are unsanitary
THE SOLUTION Waterless urinals are: Cheaper in the long run Cleaner More sustainable WHY? One urinal uses 1.5 gallons of water per flush A 1.5 gpf urinal amounts to around 30,000 gallons per year Based on a building with a few dozen males using the bathroom 3 times a day each At Aloha, the amount would be substantially larger With multiple urinals per bathroom, multiple bathrooms throughout the school, and hundreds of people using them each day, the amount of wasted water is enormous Replacing three urinals, one bathroom, would save hundreds of thousands gallons of water each year Water usage is reduced by 100%
WATERLESS VS. TRADITIONAL Has zero water consumption Leaves no odor Reduces amount of waste water Has less bacteria Water promotes bacterial growth Easily replaces old units Less maintenance Will pay for themselves Is less efficient Wastes water Produces odors More bacteria Cheaper, but water bill costs more Harder to clean THE HARD TRUTH Sealant must be replaced every 1,500 uses Trap cartridges may get clogged from urine sediment STEPS TO SUCCESS Funding: Each waterless urinal can cost anywhere from $250-1000 per unit, so funding would be needed from the district. Installing: It would take time to install all of the units and replace the current urinals in the bathrooms. Depending on how big of a priority this is, it could take anywhere from a year to three years to phase out all the old urinals. COSTS The Falcon Brands most popular design, the F1000 costs about $500 each unit. To replace four bathrooms in Aloha, each with 4 urinals, it would cost $8000 altogether The urinals would pay for themselves in a few years with the amount of water that they save Sealant costs $60 per gallon, replace every 3-6 months Cartridges would need to be replaced a few times a year, costing $50 ea. CONTACTS AND PROCESS Administrators would need to be contacted about funding The janitors would need to determine if its plausible to replace the old urinals with new ones See if pipes are compatible If funded, they would need to be installed during the summer TOILETS OF THE FUTURE
