At the first I would like to thank my module faculty Miss
Manreet Deol and Mr. Dhiraj Kumar for their guidance and
support throughout the preparation of this documentation.
I am also thankful to my other faculties, friends and
colleagues who have offered us advices time to time to
improve my work and for their valuable suggestions without
which the work would have not been possible.

The Design II costume jewellery module deals in building up the insight
knowledge of the costume jewellery world. It tell what is costume jewellery all
about, how it differ from other jewellery. The module also provides the
knowledge of all the materials which incorporate under this, in the
preparation of costume jewellery.
Beside studying we all tried to design a collection of wearable
jewellery and an art piece on a specific theme.

This was a group assignment given initially to compare between these three
terms costume jewellery, fashion jewellery and imitation jewellery .
The assignment says to prepare three different circular collage
on these three terms of approx four feet in height, which should incorporate
visuals as well as text. As to build up the clear understanding between
costume, fashion and imitation jewellery.

This Costume jewelry design Class focused on three distinct yet interconnected
projects.
The first part composed of conceptualizing and making an Art
installation of objects that reflects a theme. The forms, materials, textures all relate
to a story that inspires a piece of Costume jewelry. This was the second
component of the project and every student conceived and crafted a unique piece
of Jewelry. This was not necessarily a piece that is practical for everyday wear but
rather an artistic expression that falls more with in the realm of wearable art.
The final project was to design and prepare illustrations for a
collection of wearable Jewelry pieces that are suitable for mass manufacture and
could be sold in retail stores.

The first stage of costume
jewellery deals in
conceptualization and making
of an art installation. This was a
group process which involves
several stages. They are as
follows:

 Different Materials and objects


were collected from the scraps,
in and around the college
campus, which were displayed.
 Segregation of theses objects
were done according to their
colour, form and material.
 Two distinct conclusion were
drawn of what these segregated
objects can be related to and
what theme can be build up on
them. (Example: abundant
factory and childhood)
 Childhood theme was
finalized.
 Brain Storming was done as a
stage to explore the theme.
 More objects were being
collected, which can be
interlinked with that of previous
ones.
 A story line was being
created, as a process to explain
the theme in a more clarified
manner.
 Finally all these ideas were
conceptualized together, and an
art installation was prepared.

Twinkle Twinkle little star,


How I wonder what you are.
Up, above the world so high,
Like a diamond in the sky.

We are inspired by the cozy, innocent world of a


child. Where bright colours and playful forms of objects inspire the
fantasy world of a child. In the world, where all playful object ,come to
life.
Playful shapes, bright colours, bring joy, that warms the
heart.
The innocent mind, mesmerized by playful shapes and bright colours,
reflects the happiness of it, in their fantasy world, and even after
growing up, the sense of joy is always the same.
Our jewellery collection would make people relive the joy
and innocence of childhood, in the realistic world.
Through our costume jewellery collection, we want to
capture the essence of childhood.
The inspiration is taken from interesting ,simple forms and
bright colours that fantasize a child.

This was an individual assignment in which taking the inspiration from the art
installation prepared in the previous step, a unique piece of jewellery was to
designed and constructed. The parameters for the preparation were:-
 The jewellery piece should strongly reflect the theme at the end of construction.
 The form, material and texture should chosen in a manner as to relate the theme.
 The piece should not necessarily be a practical piece, which could be wear in
daily life.
 It should depict art expression.

Construction Process
 Various sketches were made and doodling was done to design the art form.
(attached next pages )
 One of them was finalized.
 Material was decided of which the jewellery had to be constructed. Which were
brass rods and black cords.
 Two objects were to be made out of brass which were a chair and a cup.
Chair
Brass rod was cut equally according to the desired size.
A chair was made out of them using the soldering method.
 Proper filing and sand paper scrubbing was done to make it edges and surface
smooth .
 Buffing tools were also used to clear the unfinished part.
Cup
 Brass sheet was being cut of a desired size using shear cutter,
 A cylinder was formed.
 It was then domed upwards from one side and downwards from another side,
using doming tools.
 Doming was done till the shape of the cup has been achieved.
 Lower portion of the cup was caped by soldering a circular brass sheet.
 Handle was cut according to the size and shape of the cup, which was later
soldered.
 Finally the chair and cup was soldered together at per design.

This was an individual assignment in which it was asked to design a collection of
wearable jewellery, using the inspiration from the art installation made.
The parameter for designing was
The collection should be very practical
It should reflect the theme
 The collection should be production friendly.
 It should sell in the retail market.
Keeping the above parameters in mind I tried and made different
sketches, out of which four of them were finalized and they include

The module costume jewellery collection was a great learning, as motivated in
many a ways, the various assignment we did under this taught me the value of
materials and scraps present in the environment. It tells every object in this world
has some potential in itself, and jewellery can me made out of them.
The module also taught me to work in a processed manner and in
stages, as to bring a fair result and better outcome.
