TRADITIONAL INSTRUMENTS

OF THE KALINGA
TONGATONG
A tongatong is a percussion
instrument made of various
lengths of bamboo, which is
found in the Kalinga province
of the Philippines. It is played
by hitting it against the
earth. Traditionally, tongatongs
are used by the people of
Kalinga to communicate with
spirits, particularly as part of
healing rituals.

A bungkaka, also known as
the bamboo buzzer is a
percussion instrument
(idiophone) made out of
bamboo common in
numerous indigenous tribes
around thr Philippines such as
the Ifugao, Kalinga, and
Ibaloi.

SAGGEYPO
It is a bamboo pipe that is closed
on one end by a node with the
open end held against the
lower lip of the player as he blows
directly across the top. The pipe
can be played individually by
one person or in ensembles of
three or more.
KOLITONG
Bamboo tube, closed at
both end by a node. In both
nodes a star shaped opening
is cut. Five strings are cut
loose from the skin, and lifted
and tuned with small pieces
of wood. The tube is cracked
and slightly opened to
improve resonance.
GANGSA
is a single hand-held smooth-
surfaced gong with a narrow
rim. A set of gangsa, which is
played one gong per
musician, consists of gangsa
tuned to different notes,
depending on regional or
local cultural preferences.
The gangsa is played in two
ways. One way is called
"toppaya" and the other is
called "pattung." In "toppaya"
style, the musicians play the
surface of the gangsa with
their hand while in a sitting
position, with a single gangsa
resting on the lap of each
musician.

A musical instrument
consisting of a flexible
metal or bamboo "tongue"
attached to a frame. This
tongue is placed in the
performer's mouth and
plucked with the finger to
produce a note of
constant pitch.

A smaller type of bamboo percussion
are the quill shaped tubes. These are
made of bamboo tubes, smaller in
diameter (ca. 3.5 cm.) than the
tongatong. They are closed in one
end with a node. In the upper
portion of the tube, about half of the
bamboo is cut away leaving the
remaining half to protrude like a
tongue.

is a bamboo instrument with
a construction like a
xylophone. It is place on the
lap while playing.

Aerophone, lip valley flute (notch
flute)
Open bamboo pipe, top end cut at
an angle. Three by one finger holes.
The paldong is a traditional lip-valley
flute of the Kalinga tribes in the
Philippines. The paldong is made of
bamboo. Its upper edge is cut away
obliquely from the backside, and
then cut away slightly from the
frontside.

Because the kalaleng is
long and has a narrow
internal diameter, it is
possible to play different
harmonics through over
blowingeven with the
rather weak airflow from
one nostril.
