TYPES OF STRESS IN ADOLESCENTS

Development that occurs between childhood and
adulthood.
Involves biological, social and psychological changes.
Steinberg (1999) categorised adolescence into three
stages:
1. Early adolescence (11-14 years old)
2. Mid adolescence (15-18 years old)
3. Late adolescence (18-21 years old)

What is adolescence?
In psychology,
- Stress is a feeling of strain and pressure.
- Symptoms may include a sense of being
overwhelmed and feelings of anxiety.
In biology,
- Stress is a persons response to a stressor such as an
environmental condition.
- Stress is a bodys way to react to a challenge.

Eustress is a positive cognitive responses to stress in
which individuals who face it will obtain satisfaction
from it.
For instance, teenagers take up the challenge with a

sorrow.
Distress affects adolescents physically and

Distress causes the heart to race, breathing to
become shallow, blood vessels to constrict, and even
insomnia.

Normally, acute stress occurs among adolescents
who experienced psychological trauma.
Psychological trauma is a type of damage that occurs
as a result of some distressing event.
For instance, a teenager witnesses the death of
another person or being threatened with another
persons death.
Acute Stress
Hypo stress is a type a stress which occurs when a
adolescent is having a boredom.
This kind of stress may cause teenagers feel restless
and anxious.
For example, teenagers who participate in a society
may face hypo stress if they are not given any tasks or
positions.

Hypo Stress
Hyper stress usually occurs among teenagers when
they being pushed over the limits of their ability or
what they can handle.
Teenagers that have this kind of stress will over react
to insignificant matters or events.
For example, they will always argue or quarrel with
their family members for a very little reason.
Hyper Stress
Chronic stress is the response to emotional pressure
suffered for a prolonged period.
Chronic stress results from a state of on going
physiological arousal.
To cite an example, people who is living in poverty
may face financial problem.

Chronic Stress
Stress may gives positive or negative effects on
individual.
If teenager unable to manage stress effectively, it
may cause them some problems.
Consequently, adolescent must be able to handle
stress wisely in order to live a better life.
