What does
classification
mean?
Classification or categorization
is a method of arranging things
into classes based on
similarities. In the case of
nutraceutical products the
similarities can be related to
material source, benefit, or
chemical bond. Or it can be
related to different interests of
different stakeholders.:
producers, consumers, and
scientists.

Tell more
about herbal
supplements!
Herbs or herbal supplements are divided into two main
categories: 1) specific herbs, and 2) tonics. Specific herbs
target a specific sympton and usually are taken for brief
periods. Tonics are meant to enhance the health of an organ
or body system and usually are taken over long term.
Herbal supplements are available in many forms: fresh from
the plant, capsules, tablets, standardized extracts, teas,
infusions and decoctions (= extracted in boiling water),
tinctures (= using alcohol based preparations) and glycerites (=
using glycerine based preparations), infused and essential oils,
and sprays.
Capsules seem to be the most convenient to consume, but
some ailments require another form such as topical.

What will be the
classification if
based on medical
benefits?
Medical benefits refer
to the kinds of health
problem consumers of
nutraceutical products
are facing. There are
more than 100 common
health problems known
publicly. A list is usually
written alphabetically
started from Acne and
ended on Yeast
Infection.
Acne
Cough
Diarrhea
Headache
Yeast Infection
Stroke
What will be the
classification if
based on chemical
bonds?
Classification based on
chemical bonds can be found
only among scientists who are
doing researches in the
laboratories or teaching in
classrooms concerning
nutraceutical products. There
we can hear terms such as:
Fatty Acids, Lipids, Protein or
Amino Acid Based, Phenolic
Compounds, Carbohydrate and
Derivatives, etc
Who are
producers of
the products?
They are individual,
community, and
corporates who are
involved in food
productions and food
industries at local,
national, regional, and
global level. They work
using traditional
technologies as well as
modern technologies.
Who are
consumers of
the products?
Consumers consist not only the sick
people or those who are at nursing
home but also young students
preparing for exams, joggers,
mountain climbers, and others doing
regular physical exercises.
Nutraceutical products are consumed
by those people for the sake of
repairing as well as maintaining their
healths. Consumers live around the
world: in the rich countries as well
as the poor countries.
Who are
scientists
for the
development
of the
products?
Scientists for the development of the
nutraceutical products can be (1) researchers at
the laboratories of the food industries, (2) food
scientists, (3) pharmacists, (4) biotechnology
developers, (5) medical doctors, and (6)
nutritionists.

products into 4
categories:
1. Natural and
Organic Foods
2. Dietary

3. Functional Foods
and Beverages
4. Natural Personal
Care Products
What kinds
of interest
they have?
By putting into 4 broader categories
they can :
1) Assure that nutraceutical products
substantially are food products;
2) Identify and map the marketing
potential of each category;
3) Change easily the products from
one category to another following
which one is giving more interest;
4) Develop the so called multinational

food industry.

How can
Natural
Personal Care
Product be
included?
Personal Care Product is supposed to be classified as cosmetic.
How can it be included as Nutraceutical Product? The main
reason for its justification seem to be taking the benefits of
having broader definition of nutraceutical product as well as
the flexible or pluralistic meanings of health. Any food or
parts of food can be claimed as nutraceutical products as far
as they can provide health benefits. Health benefits can be
many things including feeling good, feeling beautiful, feeling
attractive, and other feelings affected from the using of
cosmetics. A product such as Aloe vera, Spirulina, or Green
Teas can be claimed as food and providing health benefits.
Another reason can be connected to the kind of business
strategy opened to broader and more promising market.
Isnt it a
cosmetic?
Consumers classification is based on the specific health benefit
created by each product. As a result the list of the kind of
product is longer.

Please tell
something
about
FOSHU!
FOSHU is the abbreviation of Foods for
Specified Health Uses. It was created in 2003
by a group of 60 Japanese scientists who did
researches related to Nutraceutical products. At
that year there were 300 kinds of food named as
FOSHU. They are classified into 7 groups
claimed as having specified health uses.
The seven groups :
1. Foods that improve gastro-intestinal conditions (Prebiotics,
Probiotics, Luminacoids).
2. Foods for those who have high serum cholesterol (Soy protein,
Chitosan, Low-molecular-weight sodium alginate).
3. Foods for those who have high blood pressure (Peptides).
4. Foods for those who have high serum triacyglycerol (Diacylglicerol).
5. Foods related to mineral absorption and transport (Casein
phosphopeptide, Calcium citrate malate, Heme, etc).
6. Non-cariogenic foods (Manitol, palatinose, and tea polyphenols).
7. Foods for those who begin to feel concerned about their blodd sugar
level (Wheat albumin, Globin digest, Guava polyphenols).

A Powerful Hypothesis

The most interesting thing of FOSHU
is the hypothesis from where the
concept was originated. The hypothesis
was formulated as follows: Foods can
modulate various functions in the body
and thus participate in the maintenance
of a state of health that reduces the
risk of lifestyle-related diseases. This
hypothesis has been supported very
much by the up-to-date knowledge in
biosciences including biochemistry and
molecular biology together with
sophisticated biotechnologies based on
these biosciences.

Early 1995, the UK Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, and
Food temporarily defined functional foods as foods that have
components incorporated to yield specific medical or
physiological benefits, other than purely nutritional effects.

Deeper attention was paid by the Europen body of the
International Life Science Institute (ILSI Europe), which
addressed the present status by claiming that we stand today
at the threshold of a new frontier in nutritional science and
also that the concept of food is changing from a past emphasis
on eating to end of hunger into a current emphasis on
promising uses of foods to reduce the risk of chronic illness.

Concept of Food has been Changed
.
Discoveries of More Health Benefits of
Food

Today more than 9,000 phytonutrients have been
documented, and this is just the tip of the iceberg.
These discoveries have changed everything we
thought we knew about foods! Oats, for example,
have long been known to lower cholesterol because
of the dietary fiber they contain. But thats not the
only reason they protect the heart. Scientists now
know that oats contain natural chemicals called
tocotrienols that are 50 percent more powerful than
even vitamin E in reducing the risk of heart disease.

Apples are another food that will surprise you.
Theyve always been thought to be healthy,
mostly because they are so chock-full vitamins
and fiber. But it turns out that its the
phytonutrients in apples (found mainly in the skin)
that are the powerhouses. In fact, theyre so
strong that one study of 40,000 women
associated the quercetin and other phytonutrients
in apples with a 13 to 22 percent lower risk of
cardiovascular disease. In addition, the quercetin
in apples (and pears) has been found to help
improve lung function, reducing the risk of asthma
and obstructive pulmonary disease.
