INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY
Information technology refers to the application of
computers and telecommunication equipments to
store, retrieve, transmit and manipulate data.

I.T. can:
Process raw data into useful information.
Recycle processed information.
Pack information into new form.
Refers to both hardware and software.

Information Technology
SYSTEMS
System :
A group of inter-dependent items that interact
regularly to perform a task is called a system.

Computer System :
Hardware and software components that run on a
computer is called as a computer system.

Information System :
A work system where all the activities are devoted to
different types of digital processing is called an
information system.

DATA AND INFORMATION
Data are any facts, numbers or text that can be
processed by a computer.

Data Types:
Integer.
Boolean.
Character.
Floating point number.

Information is the processed data which carries
important information for any reference.
The relation between data and information
SOFTWARE AND HARDWARE
Software is one or more computer programs and
related data that instructs a computer what to do
and how to do it.
Software can also be defined as a set of programs,
procedures and associated documentation
concerned with the operation of data processing.
Types of software:
System software: Direct control and access to
computer hardware and memory locations.
Application software: Runs under system
software to do a specific task.
Hardware is the physical components that make up
a computer system.

THE COMPUTER
A computer is a programmable machine designed
to sequentially and automatically carry out a
sequence of arithmetic and logical calculations.
Parts of computer:

Product design (Computer Aided Design or CAD)
Product manufacturing (Computer Aided
Manufacturing or CAM)
I.T at home and play
I.T in education and training
I.T in science and engineering
Computer applications
COMPUTERS IN HIDING
Large computers:
e.g.: mega systems which perform tasks at the back
end.
Small computers:
e.g.: small automated machine or networks which
work at the back end facilitates the user.
Embedded computers:
e.g.: a computer on a chip integrates all components
of a computer or electronics system on to a single
chip.
