STERILIZATION
-use of high temperature wet heat treatment of loose fruit and
pressurized steam
PURPOSES:
PREVENT FURTHER RISE IN FRESH FRUIT BUNCH
FACILITATE STRIPPING OF FRUITS
HELP TO SOLIDIFY PROTEIN

INEFFICIENT STERILIZATION(lead to..)
-fruits are not loosed enough
-pericarp is not softened
-poor oil recovery

STRIPPING (removal of fruit from the bunches)
Sterilized bunches are placed into a
rotary drum treshers where the fruits
are separated from the bunch stalk
THRESHER


PRESSING AND SCREENING
(palm oil extraction)
3 methods:-
1. Mechanical presses called dry method
2. wet method use hot water
3. Pre pressing followed by solvent
extraction
CLARIFICATION AND PURIFICATION
To separate the oil
from its entrained
impurities
Average composition
of crude oil
i. 66% oil
ii. 24% water
iii. 10% non-oily solid
To give clear stable
product of acceptable
appearance,water
and impurities
removed
VACUUM DRYING
Decrease moisture of CPO
Continuous clarifiers
consist of 3 compartment;
1. Treat the crude mixture
2. Dry decanted oil
3. Hold finished oil in an
outer shell
STORAGE
The purified and dried oil is
transferred to a tank
Temperature of storage is around
50C
Used hot water or low-pressure
steam-heating coil , to prevent
solidification and fractionation
