VALENTINE'S DAY

INTRODUCTION
 Valentine day originated almost 1700 years
back
 Initially it was one of the festivals of the
pagan Romans used to be celebrated on 14
Feb
 According to goddess “Uno” the goddess of
marriages, 14 Feb was a sacred day
 The execution of saint Valentine on 14
February 270 CE turned this festival into the
festival of love and affection, the Valentine’s
Day
 Because he is regarded highly by the
Christians as he opposed the decree of
Claudius II
 Claudius II decreed in the third century CE
that soldiers should not get married, because
marriage would distract them from the wars
they used to fight
 Saint Valentine started to perform marriages
for the soldiers in secret
 The emperor found out about that, he threw
him in jail and sentenced him to execution
OBJECTIVE
 Muslim boys and girls celebrate this day and
express joy and happiness which do not bode
well
 We don't need a contrived special day to
underscore the natural love in our
relationships
ISLAM AND
VALENTINE'S DAY
 In Islam the festivals are clearly defined and
well established and no additions or
subtractions may be accepted
 Valentine’s Day goes back to Roman times,
not Islamic times, this means that it is
something which belongs exclusively to the
Christians, not to Islam
 Muslims have no share and no part in it as the
Prophet (PBUH) said “Every nation has its Eid”
 Islam does recognize happy occasions that
bring people closer to one another, and add
spice to their lives
 However, Islam goes against blindly imitating
the West regarding a special occasion such as
Valentine’s Day
 Valentine’s day do not distinguish between
the legitimate love in the relationship
between and the forbidden love
 Islam requires all Muslims to love one another
all over the whole year, and reducing the
whole year to a single day is totally rejected
 Expression of feelings and emotions is not a
justification for the Muslim to allocate a day
for celebration based on his own thoughts and
ideas, and to call it a festival, or make it like a
festival or Eid
LOVE AND
VALENTINE'S DAY
 The love referred to on this day is romantic
love, they are not talking of pure love
 The one who sincerely loves someone does
not need this holiday to remind of his love he
can expresses his love for at all times and on
all occasions
 constructed to play upon our romantic
insecurities to sell cards and flowers
 Romantic gifts at astronomical prices are
popping up in Pakistan's big cities
commercialism is in the air, overshadowing
the love
 If you have to buy things to demonstrate
your love, then that love does not run very
deep
 Love must be performed everyday in the
fulfillment of our duties to those closest to
us. Love has a natural flow that cannot be
altered by an array of material goods
CONCLUSION
 Valentine's Day runs counter to deep Islamic and
Pakistani traditions
 There is no religion which encourages its followers to
love and care for one another more than Islam does but
this applies at all times and in all circumstances, not
just on one particular day
 If it is not allowed to imitate the Christians in things that
really are part of their religion but not part of our
religion then how about things which they have
innovated in their religion themselves?
 There are practices that occur on that day and those
practices are capable of dissuading people from the
true meanings of love and altruism to the extent that
the celebration is reduced to a moral decline
