A SITUAO
Imagine a seguinte situao: voc est iniciando a leitura
de um texto sobre energia solar, encontrado numa
enciclopdia para crianas. O texto lhe causa alguma
dificuldade; a leitura no flui muito bem, pois voc se
depara com muitas palavras que desconhece. Voc se
pergunta se h alguma maneira de diminuir a sensao de
dificuldade que tal leitura parece lhe trazer.

O TEXTO
Energy from the sun
The energy we receive from the Sun is called solar energy. It
consists mainly of light and heat that travel through space.
These forms of energy come from atoms smashing into each
other in the centre of the Sun and joining together, or fusing.
This process is called nuclear fusion. Energy that comes from
the centres or nuclei of atoms is called nuclear energy. The
form of nuclear energy in nuclear power stations here on Earth
comes from nuclear fission, when atoms split apart.

A ESTRATGIA

H boas razes para o texto acima causar uma
dificuldade inicial ao leitor: o assunto bem especfico
(energia solar) e h algumas informaes complexas sobre
o processo de produo de energia pelo sol.
A boa notcia que o texto, bem como a grande maioria
dos textos em ingls com que nos deparamos, contm
muitas palavras transparentes, isto , que se parecem
com palavras da lngua portuguesa.

H 14 palavras transparentes no texto: energy, receive,
solar, consists, space, forms, atoms, centre, process,
nuclear, fusion, nuclei, stations, fission. Ao todo, incluindo
as repeties das palavras anteriores, encontramos 26
palavras transparentes no pargrafo acima, o que faz com
que cerca de 30% do texto seja transparente para o
leitor brasileiro (h 84 palavras ao todo no texto). Ou seja,
mesmo que no possamos compreender detalhes do
texto, muito fcil ter uma ideia geral sobre seu contedo
a partir da identificao das palavras transparentes.

importante ressaltar que essa estratgia ser
especialmente til em textos que possuem maior
quantidade de palavras oriundas do latim, pois a lngua
portuguesa tem enorme quantidade de palavras dessa
mesma origem. Estima-se que mais da metade do
vocabulrio em ingls seja oriundo do latim. No entanto,
em ingls, as palavras latinas so mais comuns em textos
formais, como aqueles que circulam no meio acadmico
ou cientfico. Na linguagem comum, so mais usuais as
palavras de origem germnica.
