States that matter is the only reality and that everything in
the world, including thought, will, and feeling, can be explained only in terms of matter All the thing which have existence are materials to which we can physically see or touch. the belief that all that exists is the physical there are no higher realities; no psychic or spiritual truths independent of the physical world gave people a whole new outlook and pleasure in life. WHAT IS MATERIALISM? Materialism is the mindset of some people to rely on their material possessions, money, physical comfort and alike. This is the tendency to disregard any spiritual values and praise the physical things they possess or wish to own. MATERIALISM Metaphysical view that there is only one substance in the universe and that substance is physical or material All things are composed of material and all phenomena [including consciousness] are the result of material interactions In other words, matter is the only substance Opposite of idealism
PHILOSOPHY If you believe you can fly, you can fly
You can only fly if theres a material thing that will allow you to do so You can hear the phone ring because you imagine it ringing You can hear it ring because there is a phone ringing MATERIALISM Dominating sense of desire to pursue wealth and other tangible things that can provide physical comforts In short, the urge to live an extravagant life
SOCIETY MATERIALISM Mindset whereby one has an excessive desire to acquire material goods. Material goods refer to the expensive goods that people buy just for pleasure and trend. ECONOMIC TYPES OF MATERIALISM Dialectical Materialism concepts and ideas are the result of material condition. Every economic order grows to a state of maximum efficiency, while at the same time developing internal contradictions or weaknesses that contribute to its decay. EXAMPLE: Feudalism Feudalism was once the trending mode of production in many parts of the world, where landlords rule over the agricultural technologies and the peasants. As time goes by, technologies developed further beyond the scope of agriculture, and there came a rise of conflict between the peasants and the landlords. The conflict and revolution brings us a new era of capitalism TYPES OF MATERIALISM Mechanical Materialism The philosophy that the only thing that exists in the world is matter. A mechanical materialist would not believe in the mind and feelings they simply believe that physical is all that there is. EXAMPLE: Winged Elephant An winged elephant is an example of what mechanical materialism rejects, relying solely on the individual perspectives by which the thought is based upon - the elephant and the eagle, for instance, as the mere existing matter.
TYPES OF MATERIALISM Christian Materialism is the combination of Christian theology with the ideas of materialism, which places a high value on material things EXAMPLE: 4 th cause form Summa Theologiae One example of Christian materialism is the fourth cause from the Summa Theologiae of St. Thomas Aquinas, known as the Final Cause. It is portrayed in something that acts for an end which it does not know and does not choose. A orange, for instance, grows into a huge orange tree and bears fruits of the same kind without any supervision or intervention from external factors. It stays as a orange until the end, and does not (and cannot) choose to bear an mango or an apple as its fruit.
TYPES OF MATERIALISM Scientistic Materialism Is the belief that physical reality, as made available to the natural sciences, is all that truly exists. Everything is a product of physical processes. EXAMPLE: Chair Rainbow is present not because a unicorn is present but because of the combined effects of dispersion, refraction and angle of elevation by which light strikes water droplets suspended in the air. TYPES OF MATERIALISM Cultural Materialism scientific research strategy that prioritizes material, behavioral and etic processes in the explanation of the evolution of human socio-cultural systems. EXAMPLE: Sacred Cow in India EFFECTS OF MATERIALISM Acquisition of material goods (lust, envy, false comfort, idolatry) Self interests, (selfishness, no compassion, greed, denies eternal soul and the Creator) Accumulation, equivalent to success (no morals, no sense of right or wrong, preoccupation to money, jealousy, thievery) Voiding all faith and spiritual deity (hopelessness, unrepentant sin, despair, eternal death) CASE ANALYSIS On corruption, that man gets blinded by power and money that they disregard the feelings of others, making rash decisions and just thinking of their own wellbeing. For the effects of media, media in all forms are shaping the minds of people, controlling them and making them prisoners in their own body, promoting material things that are not that essential just to gain profit and create a false image of what true happiness and beauty is. For science, science seeks to explain things by the use of physical means. Things that are perceivable through the senses, that they sometimes disregard the religious sector just to get the results they intend. CASE ANALYSIS Summing it all up; from the homily last sunday that 92% of the population in the philippines is poor because of corruption. The rich are getting richer and the poor are getting poorer. Because of a high Ego, which leads to misunderstanding because People just want to gain for themselves. Instead we should practice agape, which is the act of giving oneself to others or simply, unconditional love. Just like how Jesus did when he came to earth to free us from all from sin and evil. Lastly we must embody caritas, the love for humankind, being charitable. So that we may achieve economic equality which is what pope francis is promoting. Since economic inequality is the source of evil. Ending the topic and quoting from the gospel reading: romans 13:8 - the only thing you should owe to anyone is love for one another, for to love the other person is to fulfill the law. If we want to live in a happier, more socially just and ecologically sustainable world, we need to reduce the power of materialism in our personal lives and in society. The more that people values materialistic aspirations and goals, the lower their happiness and life satisfaction.
The message is for us to live the "good" life, not the "goods" life.
